Xiao Zhen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2000/10/03

Dr. Jin Lianchun reply Dermatology

Dr.
Jin Lian-chun from Pingtung Hospital's Dermatology Department responded: After cryotherapy, there may be a phenomenon of melanin deposition, which will disappear after some time; generally, it will not leave scars.
Flat warts are caused by a viral infection, so they are related to your lower immune function.
Therefore, you must (1) sleep 6 to 8 hours before 11 PM, (2) exercise at least 3 days a week for at least 30 minutes each time, (3) consume Job's tears to boost your immune system, (4) maintain a positive mood and not let stress bother you, and (5) avoid facials, do not use scrubs, and refrain from excessive rubbing while washing your face.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

More Info

Cryotherapy, or cryosurgery, is a common treatment for various skin conditions, including flat warts (verrucae planae). This procedure involves applying extreme cold to the affected area, usually with liquid nitrogen, to destroy abnormal skin cells. While cryotherapy is generally effective, many patients are concerned about the potential for scarring, especially when the treatment is performed on the face.

Will Cryotherapy Leave Scars?
The risk of scarring from cryotherapy largely depends on several factors, including:
1. Depth of Treatment: Cryotherapy can be superficial or deeper, depending on the condition being treated. Superficial treatments are less likely to cause scarring compared to deeper treatments that may affect the dermis.

2. Skin Type: Individuals with darker skin tones may be at a higher risk for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) after cryotherapy. This condition can cause dark spots to appear on the skin after inflammation or injury.

3. Aftercare: Proper aftercare is crucial in minimizing the risk of scarring. If the treated area is not cared for correctly, it can lead to complications such as infection or delayed healing, both of which can increase the likelihood of scarring.

4. Individual Healing Response: Each person's skin heals differently. Some may experience more pronounced healing responses, leading to scarring, while others may heal without any issues.

Prevention Tips
To minimize the risk of scarring after cryotherapy, consider the following tips:
1. Consult a Dermatologist: Before undergoing cryotherapy, consult with a qualified dermatologist who can assess your skin type and the specific condition being treated. They can recommend the most appropriate treatment plan and technique.

2. Follow Pre-Treatment Instructions: Your dermatologist may provide specific instructions to prepare your skin for treatment. Following these guidelines can help reduce complications.

3. Post-Treatment Care: After cryotherapy, keep the treated area clean and moisturized. Avoid picking at scabs or blisters that may form, as this can lead to scarring.

4. Sun Protection: Protect the treated area from sun exposure. UV rays can darken healing skin and increase the risk of hyperpigmentation. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply it regularly.

5. Avoid Irritating Products: For a few weeks after treatment, avoid using harsh skincare products, such as retinoids or exfoliants, on the treated area. These can irritate the skin and hinder the healing process.

6. Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Healthy Diet: Proper hydration and nutrition can support skin healing. Foods rich in vitamins C and E, as well as zinc, can promote skin repair.

7. Monitor for Complications: Keep an eye on the treated area for signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or pus. If you notice any concerning symptoms, contact your dermatologist promptly.

8. Consider Alternative Treatments: If you are particularly concerned about scarring, discuss alternative treatments with your dermatologist. Options such as laser therapy or topical treatments may be less likely to cause scarring.

In conclusion, while cryotherapy can be an effective treatment for flat warts, it does carry a risk of scarring, particularly on the face. By understanding the factors that contribute to scarring and following preventive measures, you can minimize this risk and promote optimal healing. Always consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment options tailored to your specific skin condition.
