Sudden increase in heart rate?
Hello Doctor: About two weeks ago, I experienced a sensation of slight dizziness for several days.
It wasn't the spinning type of dizziness, but I felt off balance while walking.
After about a week, the dizziness subsided, but I started to notice my heart racing inexplicably for 1-2 seconds.
Initially, this happened about once or twice a day, but since yesterday, it has become more frequent, occurring four to five times a day.
I would like to ask the doctor what kind of issue this might be.
Ms. Huang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/08/04
Dr. He Dongjin reply Cardiology
Hello, it sounds like you may be experiencing benign paroxysmal arrhythmia, which should not be a cause for concern.
However, if you continue to feel unwell, it is advisable to visit a cardiology clinic for further evaluation.

Sudden increases in heart rate, also known as tachycardia, can be concerning and may arise from various underlying causes. In your case, experiencing episodes of increased heart rate accompanied by dizziness can be indicative of several factors, including physiological responses, emotional stress, or potential underlying medical conditions.
Firstly, it's important to understand that the heart rate can increase due to a variety of reasons. Common physiological triggers include physical exertion, stress, anxiety, or even caffeine intake. For instance, when you engage in physical activity, your heart rate naturally increases to supply more oxygen to your muscles. Similarly, emotional stress or anxiety can activate the body's "fight or flight" response, leading to an increase in heart rate. This is often accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness or a feeling of lightheadedness, especially if the heart rate spikes suddenly.
In your case, the episodes of heart rate increase lasting 1-2 seconds and occurring multiple times a day could be related to what is known as "premature atrial contractions" (PACs) or "premature ventricular contractions" (PVCs). These are common types of arrhythmias that can occur in healthy individuals and are often benign. They can be triggered by stress, fatigue, or stimulants like caffeine. The fact that you experienced dizziness alongside these episodes may suggest that your body is reacting to the sudden changes in heart rate, which can affect blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain.
However, it is crucial to consider other potential causes. Given your history of mild mitral and aortic valve regurgitation, it is essential to monitor your heart health closely. While these conditions are often manageable and may not cause significant issues, they can sometimes contribute to symptoms like palpitations or dizziness, especially if there are changes in your heart's function or if you experience increased physical or emotional stress.
In terms of immediate concerns, if your episodes of increased heart rate are infrequent and resolve quickly without significant symptoms (like chest pain, severe dizziness, or fainting), they may not pose an immediate life-threatening risk. However, the increasing frequency of these episodes, as you described, warrants further evaluation. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider, preferably a cardiologist, who can perform a thorough assessment, including a detailed history, physical examination, and possibly additional tests such as a Holter monitor (24-hour ECG) or an echocardiogram to evaluate your heart's structure and function more closely.
In conclusion, while occasional increases in heart rate can be benign, the frequency and associated symptoms you are experiencing should not be ignored. It is essential to seek medical advice to rule out any serious underlying conditions and to ensure that your heart health is being monitored appropriately. Lifestyle modifications, such as managing stress, avoiding stimulants, and maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine, can also play a significant role in managing your symptoms.
