Chest compression pain?
Hello, doctor.
This week, when I was massaging my chest, I felt pain in the area near the left armpit, slightly to the right, close to the chest.
However, I don't seem to feel any lumps, and there are no indentations or protrusions in the chest; the pain only occurs when I apply pressure.
I would like to know what might be the cause.

Dr. Yuan Tianmin reply Breast and Thyroid
Breast pain has multiple causes.
If you're concerned, it's advisable to get an ultrasound at the hospital.

Understanding chest pain, especially in relation to breast health, can be quite complex due to the variety of potential causes. Based on your description of experiencing pain when pressing on the area near your left armpit and chest, it is important to consider several factors that could contribute to this discomfort.
Firstly, the pain you are experiencing could be musculoskeletal in nature. This type of pain often arises from muscle strain, inflammation, or irritation of the muscles and connective tissues in the chest wall. Activities such as heavy lifting, poor posture, or even certain movements during massage can lead to muscle soreness or strain, which may manifest as localized pain when pressure is applied. Given that you did not feel any hard lumps or see any visible deformities in the breast, this could be a plausible explanation.
Another possibility is that the pain is related to nerve irritation or compression. The intercostal nerves, which run between the ribs, can become irritated due to muscle tension or injury, leading to pain that may be felt in the chest or under the arm. This type of pain can sometimes mimic other conditions, making it important to consider the context of your symptoms.
Additionally, hormonal fluctuations can also play a role in breast tenderness and discomfort. Many women experience breast pain related to their menstrual cycle, which can cause swelling and tenderness in the breast tissue. While your symptoms seem localized to the area near the armpit, hormonal changes can sometimes lead to generalized breast discomfort.
It is also worth noting that while breast cancer is a concern for many, it is less commonly associated with pain unless there are other significant symptoms present, such as a palpable mass, changes in the skin, or discharge from the nipple. The absence of a hard lump and the nature of your pain make this less likely, but it is always wise to remain vigilant and consult a healthcare provider for any new or concerning symptoms.
If the pain persists or worsens, or if you develop additional symptoms such as swelling, redness, or changes in breast appearance, it would be advisable to seek further evaluation from a healthcare professional. They may recommend imaging studies, such as a mammogram or ultrasound, to rule out any underlying issues.
In summary, the pain you are experiencing could be due to musculoskeletal strain, nerve irritation, or hormonal changes. It is essential to monitor your symptoms and consult with a healthcare provider if there are any changes or if the pain does not resolve. Regular check-ups and being aware of your body’s signals are key components of maintaining breast health and overall well-being.
