Can contact lenses be worn after cataract surgery?

I underwent cataract surgery on my right eye on June 11, with a lens implant that has a power of +2.50 diopters.
The recovery has been good.
My left eye has a myopia of -9.50 diopters, and I am currently wearing contact lenses.
I feel a disparity in vision during sports activities.
My questions are: 1.
Can I wear contact lenses in my right eye during sports to adjust for the disparity? 2.
If so, what prescription should the contact lenses be?

Mr. Luo, 50~59 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/08/15

After cataract surgery, many patients wonder about the appropriate time to resume wearing contact lenses, especially if they have different prescriptions in each eye. In your case, having undergone cataract surgery on your right eye and still wearing contact lenses for your left eye with a significant prescription of -9.50 diopters, it’s essential to approach this situation with caution and proper guidance.

1. Wearing Contact Lenses After Cataract Surgery: Generally, after cataract surgery, it is advisable to wait for a certain period before resuming the use of contact lenses. This waiting period allows the eye to heal properly and ensures that the new intraocular lens (IOL) settles in place. Most eye care professionals recommend waiting at least 2 to 4 weeks post-surgery before considering contact lens use. However, this can vary based on individual healing and the specific recommendations of your ophthalmologist.

2. Adjusting for Visual Discrepancies: If you are experiencing visual discrepancies or "visual disparity" due to the difference in prescriptions between your two eyes, wearing contact lenses in your right eye may help balance your vision during activities like sports. However, it’s crucial to consult your eye doctor before making this decision. They will assess your healing progress and determine if your right eye is ready for contact lens wear.

3. Determining the Correct Prescription: If your eye doctor approves the use of contact lenses in your right eye, they will need to perform a fitting to determine the appropriate prescription. Since you mentioned that your right eye had a residual prescription of +2.50 diopters after surgery, the contact lens prescription may differ slightly due to factors like lens thickness and curvature. Your eye care provider will take these factors into account to provide you with the correct prescription for your contact lenses.

4. Considerations for Sports: When engaging in sports or physical activities, wearing contact lenses can provide a wider field of vision and reduce the risk of glasses falling off or breaking. However, ensure that the lenses are comfortable and do not cause any irritation. If you experience discomfort or visual disturbances while wearing contact lenses, it’s essential to remove them and consult your eye doctor.

5. Follow-Up Appointments: Regular follow-up appointments with your ophthalmologist are crucial after cataract surgery. These visits allow your doctor to monitor your healing process, check the positioning of the IOL, and address any concerns you may have regarding your vision or the use of contact lenses.

In summary, while it is possible to wear contact lenses after cataract surgery, it is essential to wait until your eye has healed sufficiently and to consult your eye care professional for personalized advice. They will help you determine the right time to resume wearing contact lenses and the appropriate prescription to ensure optimal vision and comfort during your activities. Always prioritize your eye health and follow your doctor's recommendations for the best outcomes.
