Irregular menstruation
Hello doctor, my last menstrual period started on July 16, and this time it started on August 18.
On the first day, I experienced significant abdominal pain, so I took two pain relievers, one around noon and another around 6 or 7 PM.
My periods usually last about 7 days, with heavier flow for the first 2 to 3 days.
This time, the flow on the first day was similar to what I usually experience, but by the second and third days, it noticeably decreased, to the point where there was hardly any blood when I wiped.
Could the sudden decrease in menstrual flow be related to the pain relievers I took, or could it be due to stress before my period?

Hello, it may be due to stress before your menstrual period; just observe it.
Wishing you good health.

Irregular menstrual cycles can be a source of concern for many women, and understanding the potential causes and implications is essential for maintaining reproductive health. Based on your description, it seems you experienced a delay in your menstrual cycle, with your last period starting on July 16 and the next on August 18. You also mentioned experiencing significant abdominal pain on the first day of your period, for which you took pain relief medication.
Firstly, it's important to note that menstrual cycles can vary for a multitude of reasons. Stress is a well-known factor that can impact the regularity and flow of menstrual periods. When a person experiences high levels of stress, the body releases hormones such as cortisol, which can interfere with the hormonal balance necessary for a regular menstrual cycle. This disruption can lead to delayed periods or changes in menstrual flow, including lighter bleeding.
Regarding the pain relief medication you took, it is possible that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen, which are commonly used to alleviate menstrual cramps, can affect menstrual flow. These medications work by reducing the production of prostaglandins, which are hormones that contribute to uterine contractions and the shedding of the uterine lining. While they can effectively reduce pain, they may also lead to a lighter flow in some women. However, this effect is usually temporary and should not cause significant long-term changes in your menstrual cycle.
Another factor to consider is the possibility of hormonal imbalances. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or changes in body weight can lead to irregular cycles and changes in menstrual flow. If you have experienced other symptoms such as weight gain, hair loss, or changes in skin condition, it may be worth discussing these with your healthcare provider.
Additionally, lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and sleep can also influence menstrual cycles. Significant changes in any of these areas can lead to irregularities. For instance, excessive exercise or sudden weight loss can disrupt the hormonal balance necessary for regular menstruation.
If your menstrual irregularities persist or if you experience other concerning symptoms, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend further evaluation, including blood tests to check hormone levels or imaging studies to assess the reproductive organs.
In summary, your experience of a delayed menstrual cycle and changes in flow could be attributed to several factors, including stress, the use of pain relief medication, and potential hormonal imbalances. It is essential to monitor your symptoms and seek medical advice if you have ongoing concerns. Regular check-ups can help ensure that any underlying issues are addressed promptly, allowing you to maintain your reproductive health effectively.
