The ultrasound examination has been completed!

Hello, my ultrasound examination has been completed (I had it done at Shudian Clinic).
The doctor said I do not have testicular cancer, but I have mild varicocele.
I would like to ask the following questions: 1) The ultrasound process was very quick, it was finished in about 5 to 6 minutes.
Is this a bit...
too fast? (Or is it because there were no abnormalities detected?) 2) What should the normal hardness of the testicles be? My hardness feels like pressing on firm muscle...
it has hardness but with slight rebound...
3) I have calculated the size of both testicles using the formula (length * width * height * π/6)...
after multiple measurements, the average values are "left side 12.6 c.c." and "right side 15.6 c.c." Is this normal? Thank you!

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: 1) An abdominal ultrasound typically takes about 20 minutes, so a test for the testicles, which are smaller in size, should take around 5 minutes, which is normal.
2) The firmness of the testicles varies from person to person; they are usually soft with some elasticity and should not be painful when lightly pressed.
3) The size should be normal.
Wishing you good health.

Thank you for your questions regarding your recent ultrasound results and testicular health. It's great to hear that your doctor has ruled out testicular cancer and identified only mild varicocele. Let's address your concerns one by one.

1. Ultrasound Duration: The duration of your ultrasound, which was around 5 to 6 minutes, is not unusual, especially if the technician did not find any abnormalities. Ultrasound examinations can vary in length depending on the complexity of the case and the number of areas being examined. In your case, since the doctor indicated that there were no significant findings, it is likely that the examination was straightforward. A quick ultrasound does not necessarily mean that it was inadequate; rather, it may reflect that the technician was able to efficiently assess the area without encountering any complications or abnormalities.

2. Normal Testicular Hardness: The normal consistency of the testicles is typically described as firm but not hard. They should feel smooth and elastic, similar to a firm muscle. The sensation you described—having some hardness with slight rebound—could be within the normal range, but it is essential to consider individual variations. If you have concerns about the texture or firmness of your testicles, it would be beneficial to discuss this with your healthcare provider, who can provide a more personalized assessment based on your medical history and physical examination.

3. Testicular Volume: The formula you used to calculate the volume of your testicles (length × width × height × π/6) is a standard method for estimating testicular volume. Normal testicular volume can vary widely among individuals, but generally, the average volume for adult males is around 15 to 25 cc per testicle. Your measurements of 12.6 cc for the left testicle and 15.6 cc for the right testicle fall within a reasonable range, especially considering that there can be a natural size difference between the two testicles. Variations in size are common and usually not a cause for concern unless accompanied by other symptoms.

In summary, based on the information provided, your ultrasound results appear to be normal, and the findings of mild varicocele are relatively common and often do not require treatment unless they cause symptoms. If you experience any discomfort, pain, or other changes in your testicular health, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. Regular check-ups and open communication with your doctor are key to maintaining your reproductive health.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out for more information or clarification. Your health and peace of mind are important, and it's always best to stay informed about your body and any potential issues.
