Unilateral sore throat?
Hello: Recently, I have been experiencing pain in one side of my throat, but I do not have a fever, runny nose, or other cold symptoms; it is just throat pain.
Sometimes it feels sharp, and I have a sensation of something being stuck.
Occasionally, I also feel pain in my right ear when swallowing.
About three months ago, I had an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and I am currently taking medication for gastroesophageal reflux disease and gastritis (Tegaserod).
Additionally, I am on the antibiotic Ofloxacin because I was previously diagnosed with epididymitis while in Taiwan, and I have been taking the antibiotic for about two weeks.
Please see the attached image: https://i.imgur.com/px30kmi.jpg.
The pain seems to be located on the right side of my throat, indicated by the white spot (on the left side of the image).
Since I am currently abroad, it is not easy to seek medical attention.
I would like to ask the doctor: 1.
What kind of examinations and treatments should I undergo for this situation? 2.
Based on the image, what condition does it appear to be? I am very concerned that it might be tonsil cancer.
Thank you.

Hello: Upon initial examination, the white area appears to be a tonsillar ulcer, which is generally associated with viral infections and inflammation.
It is recommended to drink plenty of water and avoid spicy foods, or to use anti-inflammatory pain relievers.
If there is no improvement after two weeks, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Hello! I understand that you're experiencing a one-sided sore throat, and I appreciate your detailed description of your symptoms and medical history. Let's address your concerns systematically.
1. Possible Causes of One-Sided Sore Throat
A one-sided sore throat can arise from various causes, and it's essential to consider the context of your symptoms. Given that you do not have fever or other cold symptoms, some potential causes include:
- Tonsillitis: Inflammation of the tonsils can lead to localized pain, often accompanied by white patches or spots, which may resemble what you have in the image. This condition can be viral or bacterial in origin.
- Pharyngitis: Similar to tonsillitis, this is an inflammation of the throat that can be unilateral and may cause pain during swallowing.
- Referred Pain: Sometimes, pain from other areas, such as the ears or teeth, can manifest as throat pain. Given your mention of ear pain when swallowing, this could be a possibility.
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Since you are being treated for GERD, it's worth noting that acid reflux can irritate the throat and lead to discomfort, which may be felt more on one side.
- Infection: A localized infection, such as a peritonsillar abscess, could also cause unilateral throat pain and might require immediate medical attention.
- Tumors: While it's natural to worry about serious conditions like cancer, especially with the presence of white spots, it's essential to remember that many benign conditions can cause similar symptoms. However, persistent symptoms warrant further investigation.
2. Recommended Actions
Given your symptoms and current medications, here are some steps you can take:
- Medical Evaluation: Since you are currently on antibiotics for epididymitis, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider about your sore throat. They may perform a physical examination and consider a throat swab to check for bacterial infections like streptococcal pharyngitis.
- Throat Examination: A healthcare provider may use a laryngoscope to visualize the throat more clearly, which can help identify any abnormalities, including the white spots you mentioned.
- Consider GERD Management: If your sore throat is related to GERD, adjusting your treatment plan may help alleviate symptoms. Discuss with your healthcare provider about optimizing your GERD management.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, such as the development of fever, difficulty swallowing, or worsening pain, which would necessitate immediate medical attention.
3. Concerns About Cancer
While it's understandable to be concerned about the possibility of throat cancer, especially with the presence of white spots, it's crucial to approach this with a balanced perspective. Many benign conditions can cause similar symptoms. Cancer typically presents with additional symptoms such as persistent pain, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, or changes in voice. If you have any of these symptoms, it's essential to seek medical evaluation promptly.
Conclusion
In summary, your one-sided sore throat could be due to various causes, ranging from infections to GERD-related irritation. It's essential to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management. While it's natural to worry about serious conditions, many causes of throat pain are treatable and not life-threatening. Please prioritize seeking medical advice, especially since you are currently on antibiotics and may need further assessment for your throat symptoms. Take care, and I hope you find relief soon!
