Chest tightness or pain the night after a fever?

I didn't eat dinner the night before last because I was feeling unwell, and then I developed a fever the next day.
I also didn't eat dinner on the day I had a fever.
Then, last night after my fever broke, I started experiencing chest tightness and pain.
It hurts when I lie down but feels somewhat relieved when I sit up.
When I touch my heart, it feels like it's beating a bit slowly, and I'm also having some difficulty breathing.
What could be the cause of this? During the summer vacation, I haven't been eating breakfast because I've been sleeping until noon.
Thank you for your response, doctor!

Dr. Jian Shuntian reply Pulmonology

Hello: There are many possible causes of chest pain.
Please first visit a pulmonologist for a chest X-ray and an electrocardiogram (ECG), and then have the physician assess the potential causes.
Thank you.

Chest pain following a fever can be concerning and may arise from various underlying causes. Given your recent history of fever and the symptoms you are experiencing, it is essential to consider several possibilities.

Firstly, the chest pain you are feeling could be related to a viral infection. Many viral illnesses can lead to inflammation of the pleura (the lining around the lungs) or even the heart muscle itself, a condition known as viral myocarditis. This inflammation can cause chest pain, especially when lying down or taking deep breaths. The fact that you experienced a fever suggests that your body was fighting off an infection, which could have contributed to these symptoms.

Another possibility is that the chest pain is musculoskeletal in nature. When you are ill, especially with fever, you may be less active, leading to muscle stiffness or strain. Additionally, coughing or changes in posture due to discomfort can lead to muscle soreness in the chest area. If the pain is more pronounced when you move or touch the area, it could indicate a musculoskeletal issue rather than a cardiac one.

It is also important to consider the impact of your eating habits on your overall health. Skipping meals, especially breakfast, can lead to low energy levels and may contribute to feelings of weakness or lightheadedness. Inadequate nutrition can also affect your immune response, making it harder for your body to recover from infections. If you are not eating regularly, this could exacerbate feelings of fatigue and discomfort.

Your description of feeling that your heart is beating slowly and experiencing difficulty breathing is particularly concerning. Bradycardia (a slower than normal heart rate) can occur due to various factors, including certain medications, electrolyte imbalances, or underlying heart conditions. Difficulty breathing, especially after a fever, could indicate a respiratory issue, such as pneumonia or bronchitis, which may require medical evaluation.

Given these symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination, blood tests, and possibly imaging studies like an ECG or chest X-ray, to determine the cause of your symptoms. They can assess whether your chest pain is related to your recent fever, a respiratory infection, or another underlying condition.

In summary, while chest pain after a fever can be attributed to various causes, including viral infections, musculoskeletal issues, or nutritional deficiencies, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Do not hesitate to seek help, especially if your symptoms worsen or if you experience additional concerning signs such as persistent shortness of breath, increased heart rate, or severe chest pain. Your health and well-being are paramount, and timely medical intervention can make a significant difference in your recovery.
