Breast issues
I just had a breast biopsy surgery yesterday.
The nurse only allowed me to buy waterproof bandages, and I received medication for bleeding control and pain relief.
The instructions state that it will take seven days for the wound to heal.
I would like to ask if I need to apply any medication to the wound after removing the bandage.
Can I use something like Betadine? Would that be harmful to the wound?

Dr. Li Zhonghuai reply Surgery
Hello! If the doctor has prescribed an ointment, please apply it; if not, keep the area dry and cover it with a sterile gauze.
You can use sterile saline or povidone-iodine for cleaning, but avoid contact with tap water.

Post-breast surgery care is crucial for ensuring proper healing and minimizing complications. After undergoing a breast surgery biopsy, such as the one you mentioned, it is essential to follow specific care guidelines to promote healing and prevent infection.
First and foremost, it is important to keep the surgical site clean and dry. The nurse's recommendation to use waterproof dressings is a good one, as it helps protect the wound from moisture and potential contaminants. Generally, after the initial dressing is removed, you should continue to keep the area clean. You can gently wash the area with mild soap and water, but avoid scrubbing the wound. Pat it dry with a clean towel, and do not apply any ointments or creams unless specifically advised by your healthcare provider.
Regarding the application of ointments like Betadine (povidone-iodine), it is crucial to consult with your surgeon or healthcare provider before doing so. While some antiseptics can help prevent infection, others may irritate the skin or delay healing. Betadine, for instance, can be drying and may cause skin irritation in some individuals. If your healthcare provider recommends using an ointment, they may suggest a specific type that is suitable for your wound.
Typically, after breast surgery, the wound will begin to heal within a week, as you mentioned. During this time, it is essential to monitor the wound for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
In terms of pain management, it is common to experience some discomfort after surgery. The medications prescribed for pain relief should be taken as directed. If the pain persists or worsens, it is important to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
As for the timeline for recovery, while the initial healing of the skin may take about a week, complete recovery can take longer. Factors such as your overall health, the extent of the surgery, and adherence to post-operative care can influence the healing process. Regular follow-up appointments with your surgeon are essential to monitor your recovery and address any concerns.
In summary, after breast surgery, it is generally advisable to avoid applying ointments unless directed by your healthcare provider. Focus on keeping the wound clean and dry, monitor for signs of infection, and manage pain as needed. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and recommendations based on your specific situation. Your health and recovery are paramount, and following professional guidance will help ensure the best possible outcome.
