First Menstrual Period After Abortion

Hello, doctor.
I had a medical abortion on July 13 and experienced bleeding until mid-August.
The doctor confirmed that the abortion was successful and mentioned that my menstrual period would likely return around August 20.
My period started on August 28, and as of now, September 8, I am still menstruating.
The flow is similar to the first day of my period and has not decreased.
Is it normal for my period to last over a week like this? Is this related to my previous abortion?

Juan, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/09/08

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the questioner: After a miscarriage, there may be a period of time when menstrual cycles become irregular.
It is recommended that if symptoms do not improve, you should still consult a physician for examination and treatment.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

Chang.

More Info

After an abortion, it is common for women to experience irregularities in their menstrual cycles as the body adjusts to the hormonal changes. In your case, having a prolonged period that lasts longer than usual following a medical abortion can be concerning, but it is not uncommon.
Typically, after a medical abortion, it may take some time for your menstrual cycle to return to its normal rhythm. The first period after an abortion can vary significantly in terms of timing, duration, and flow. It is not unusual for the first period to be heavier or longer than normal, as your body is shedding the uterine lining that was built up during the pregnancy.
In your situation, since you experienced bleeding from July 13 until mid-August and then had your period starting on August 28, it is possible that what you are experiencing now is a continuation of that adjustment period. However, if your period has lasted for more than a week and is still heavy, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider. They may want to rule out any complications, such as retained products of conception, which can sometimes occur after an abortion and lead to prolonged bleeding.

Additionally, hormonal fluctuations can also affect the menstrual cycle. After an abortion, your body needs time to recalibrate hormone levels, which can lead to variations in menstrual flow and duration. Stress, changes in weight, and other lifestyle factors can also impact your cycle during this time.

It is important to monitor your symptoms. If you experience any of the following, you should seek medical attention promptly:
- Soaking through one or more pads or tampons every hour for several consecutive hours.

- Severe abdominal pain or cramping that does not improve with over-the-counter pain medication.

- Fever or chills, which could indicate an infection.

- Foul-smelling discharge, which could be a sign of retained tissue or infection.

In summary, while it is not uncommon to have a prolonged period after an abortion, it is essential to keep an eye on your symptoms and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns. They can provide a thorough evaluation and ensure that your recovery is progressing as expected. Remember, every woman's body is different, and what is normal for one person may not be for another. Your healthcare provider is your best resource for understanding your specific situation and ensuring your health and well-being.
