Pearly penile papules
In the past week or two, I developed red, swollen bumps on my penis that looked like pimples.
I went to a dermatologist, and they were able to extract pus from them.
After taking medication for over a week, I thought it had cleared up, but they reappeared.
Could this be considered acne, or is it another condition?

Hello: Based on the description, the presence of pus suggests that it is more likely a bacterial infection causing folliculitis, a boil, or a carbuncle.
It is recommended to return for follow-up treatment.
Thank you!

More Info
When it comes to red bumps on the penis, it is essential to consider various possibilities, as these can arise from different causes. The description of red, swollen bumps that resemble acne could indicate several conditions, including folliculitis, pearly penile papules, or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as herpes or genital warts.
1. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, which can occur anywhere on the body, including the genital area. It often presents as small red bumps that can be itchy or painful. If these bumps have pus, it may indicate a bacterial infection. Treatment typically involves topical antibiotics or antiseptics, and in some cases, oral antibiotics may be necessary.
2. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, harmless bumps that appear around the corona of the glans (the head of the penis). They are normal anatomical variations and do not require treatment. They are often mistaken for a pathological condition but are completely benign.
3. Genital Warts: Caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), genital warts can appear as small, flesh-colored or red bumps. They may be raised or flat and can sometimes be itchy or uncomfortable. If you suspect genital warts, it is crucial to see a healthcare provider for diagnosis and management.
4. Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV): This viral infection can cause painful blisters or sores on the genital area. The initial outbreak may be accompanied by flu-like symptoms, and subsequent outbreaks can occur. Antiviral medications can help manage symptoms and reduce the frequency of outbreaks.
5. Other Conditions: Other potential causes of red bumps include contact dermatitis (an allergic reaction), fungal infections, or other sexually transmitted infections.
Given that you have already seen a dermatologist and received treatment, it is important to follow up if the bumps reappear. Persistent or recurrent lesions may require further evaluation, including a possible biopsy or testing for STIs.
In terms of management, maintaining good hygiene is crucial. Avoiding irritants such as harsh soaps or lotions in the genital area can help. If the bumps are indeed due to an infection, completing the prescribed course of medication is essential.
If you notice any additional symptoms such as pain, discharge, or changes in urination, it is vital to seek medical attention promptly. Regular check-ups and open communication with your healthcare provider can help ensure that any underlying issues are addressed effectively.
In conclusion, while red bumps on the penis may resemble acne, they can represent various conditions. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is necessary to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment.
