Can local correction be performed under MRI?
Hello Doctor, I have had a missing tooth on the lower right side of my mouth for a long time, which has caused my upper teeth to shift downwards (two teeth).
I have currently had two bone screws placed and localized orthodontic treatment to pull the teeth upwards.
Since I have previously undergone a craniotomy on the left side, I have regular MRI follow-ups.
I would like to know if I can continue to have MRI scans during the orthodontic treatment (the issue is on the left side, while the orthodontics is on the right side), or if I need to wait until the treatment is completed.
Additionally, if I have dental implants in the future, will I still be able to continue with MRI follow-ups? I appreciate your response, thank you!

Hello, for an MRI, the head and neck area is not suitable for individuals with metal products.
It is recommended to discuss with your orthodontist about removing the braces and bone screws, conducting the imaging, and then reapplying them.
Alternatively, if the treatment is nearing completion, you may consider waiting until the orthodontic treatment is finished before proceeding with the imaging.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

When considering whether you can undergo an MRI while receiving dental orthodontic treatment, there are several factors to take into account, particularly regarding the materials used in orthodontics and the nature of the MRI procedure itself.
Firstly, the primary concern with MRI scans is the presence of metal. MRI machines use powerful magnets, and any ferromagnetic materials can pose a risk during the scan. Traditional orthodontic appliances, such as braces, often contain metal components that could potentially interfere with the MRI. If you have metal braces or other orthodontic devices, it is generally recommended to consult with your orthodontist about the safety of undergoing an MRI while these devices are in place. In many cases, it may be advisable to remove these appliances before the MRI to avoid any complications.
In your specific situation, where you have had cranial surgery and require regular MRI scans for monitoring, it is crucial to communicate with both your orthodontist and the radiologist. If your orthodontic treatment is nearing completion, it may be best to wait until the treatment is finished before scheduling your MRI. However, if your orthodontic devices are removable, you might be able to take them out for the duration of the MRI.
Regarding dental implants, the materials used in most dental implants (such as titanium) are generally considered safe for MRI. Titanium is non-ferromagnetic and does not pose a risk of movement or heating during the MRI. However, it is still essential to inform the radiologist about any implants you have, as they may need to adjust the MRI settings or take additional precautions.
In summary, while it is possible to undergo an MRI during orthodontic treatment, the safety and feasibility depend on the specific materials used in your orthodontic appliances. Here are some recommendations:
1. Consult Your Orthodontist: Discuss your need for an MRI with your orthodontist. They can provide guidance on whether your current orthodontic devices can remain in place during the MRI or if they should be removed.
2. Communicate with the Radiologist: Inform the radiologist about any orthodontic devices or dental implants you have. They can assess the situation and determine the best course of action.
3. Consider Timing: If your orthodontic treatment is close to completion, it might be more convenient to wait until after the treatment for your MRI. This can help avoid any potential complications or the need for additional procedures.
4. Safety of Dental Implants: If you have dental implants, they are typically safe for MRI scans. Just ensure that the radiology team is aware of their presence.
5. Regular Monitoring: Since you have a history of cranial surgery, regular monitoring is essential. If you experience any changes in your condition or have concerns about your dental treatment, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare providers.
In conclusion, while undergoing an MRI during orthodontic treatment is possible, it requires careful consideration of the materials involved and communication with your healthcare providers. Always prioritize safety and ensure that you have a clear understanding of the implications of your orthodontic treatment on your MRI scans.
