Menstrual Cycle: Concerns About Discharge and Infection Risks - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Regarding the menstrual period?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask a private question.
My menstrual period just started, but I am experiencing heightened sexual desire, so I watched an adult film to relieve it.
I noticed some discharge from my intimate area.
Could this discharge lead to a vaginal or urinary tract infection while I am on my period? Later, when I urinated, I felt like I couldn't fully empty my bladder and wanted to urinate again, but I didn't experience any discomfort while urinating.
Thank you for your response!

P, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/09/20

Dr. Huang Jianzhong reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

During menstruation, it is indeed common for some individuals to experience heightened sexual desire.
Watching adult films can lead to some secretions from the genital area.
Touching the area can potentially increase the risk of vaginal or urinary tract infections.
The sensation of not fully emptying the bladder after urination, despite no discomfort while urinating, may indicate mild inflammation.
It is advisable to drink plenty of water (around 2000cc) to help alleviate this sensation.

When it comes to understanding the menstrual cycle and the associated concerns about discharge and potential infection risks, it's important to consider several factors related to vaginal health, hormonal changes, and personal hygiene.

Firstly, during menstruation, the body undergoes various hormonal fluctuations that can affect vaginal discharge. It is common for women to experience changes in discharge consistency and volume throughout their menstrual cycle. During your period, the discharge may include menstrual blood, which can mix with cervical mucus. This mixture can sometimes lead to a feeling of increased moisture or a different odor, which is normal. However, if you notice a significant change in color, consistency, or odor of the discharge, it could indicate an infection, and it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider.

Regarding your concern about watching explicit content and its potential impact on vaginal health, it's essential to understand that the act itself does not directly cause infections. However, if you engage in any sexual activity, including masturbation, it is crucial to maintain proper hygiene. If you use any objects or fingers, ensure they are clean to prevent introducing bacteria into the vaginal canal.
The feeling of not being able to fully empty your bladder after urination, known as urinary hesitancy, can be concerning. While it is not uncommon to feel this sensation, especially during your menstrual period due to hormonal changes and increased sensitivity, it is essential to monitor for any additional symptoms. If you experience pain during urination, a burning sensation, or if the feeling persists, it could indicate a urinary tract infection (UTI) or another issue that may require medical attention.

Infections such as UTIs are more common in women due to the anatomical structure of the urinary tract. The urethra is shorter in women, making it easier for bacteria to travel to the bladder. During menstruation, the risk of infection can increase if proper hygiene is not maintained. It is advisable to wipe from front to back after using the bathroom, change menstrual products regularly, and avoid using irritating products in the genital area.

To summarize, while the discharge during your menstrual period is typically normal, any significant changes or discomfort should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Maintaining good hygiene practices is crucial in reducing the risk of infections. If you have ongoing concerns about your symptoms or if they worsen, seeking medical advice is always the best course of action. Remember, your health and comfort are paramount, and addressing any issues early can lead to better outcomes.
