Sensation and appearance after circumcision?
Hello Doctor: I underwent laser circumcision surgery on September 5th.
After two weeks, all the sutures have fallen out, but I have a new issue.
There are new blood vessels on both sides of the shaft that feel grainy and look like a small bean, and they feel hard, especially noticeable during an erection.
Will this grainy feeling go away? It looks quite unsightly and feels uncomfortable.
Is it just a matter of time? If it doesn't go away, can I consult a plastic surgeon for correction? I really hope my penis can look better; otherwise, it really resembles a sexually transmitted infection...

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: If it is not scar tissue, it should disappear or shrink within 2-3 weeks.
If it persists, it is advisable to seek medical attention to determine the issue.
If it does not resolve, you can consult a plastic surgeon, which is certainly okay.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing a circumcision procedure, it is common for patients to have concerns regarding the appearance and sensations in the area. Your experience of noticing new blood vessels and a "granular" feeling around the frenulum (the band of tissue on the underside of the penis) is not unusual. This can be attributed to the healing process, which often involves the formation of new tissue and blood vessels as the body repairs itself.
What to Expect After Circumcision
1. Healing Process: After circumcision, the healing process can take several weeks. During this time, it is normal to experience some swelling, tenderness, and changes in the texture of the skin. The body is working to heal the surgical site, which can lead to the formation of scar tissue and new blood vessels.
2. Granular Sensation: The "granular" feeling you describe may be due to the formation of new tissue or scar tissue. As the area heals, these sensations may diminish over time. It is important to give your body adequate time to heal, which can vary from person to person.
3. Appearance Concerns: The appearance of the area can change as healing progresses. Initially, there may be some irregularities, but these often improve as the swelling goes down and the tissue matures. If the appearance does not improve over time, or if you have persistent concerns, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional.
4. When to Seek Help: If the granular sensation persists beyond the typical healing period (usually around 4-6 weeks), or if you experience pain, unusual discharge, or signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or fever), you should seek medical advice.
5. Consulting a Specialist: If you are still concerned about the appearance after a reasonable healing period, consulting a urologist or a plastic surgeon who specializes in genital procedures may be beneficial. They can assess the area and discuss potential options for cosmetic improvement if necessary.
Additional Considerations
- Psychological Impact: It is not uncommon for individuals to feel anxious about the appearance of their genitalia after surgery. This can be exacerbated by societal perceptions and personal expectations. It is important to remember that healing takes time, and many concerns may resolve naturally.
- Follow-Up Care: Ensure you attend any follow-up appointments with your surgeon or urologist. They can provide reassurance and monitor your healing progress.
- Self-Care: Follow any post-operative care instructions provided by your healthcare provider. This may include recommendations for hygiene, activity restrictions, and signs to watch for that may indicate complications.
In conclusion, while it is understandable to have concerns about the appearance and sensations following circumcision, many of these issues are typically temporary and resolve with time. If you have ongoing concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for further evaluation and guidance. Your comfort and peace of mind are important, and there are options available should you need them.
