Menstruation lasts only 3 days?

Hello, Doctor.
I have been consistently taking oral contraceptives, and my menstrual period usually lasts about 7 days.
My period started on September 20.
On September 23, I consumed a significant amount of cold beer, and the next day my menstruation completely stopped—there was not a single drop.
The last time I had sexual intercourse was on September 7, and I took a pregnancy test on the afternoon of September 24, which showed only one line.

1.
Doctor, could my bleeding be implantation bleeding in early pregnancy?
2.
Doctor, if it is not pregnancy, why was my menstrual period so short?
Thank you, Doctor.

Understanding short menstrual cycles can be complex, especially when considering factors such as hormonal contraceptives, lifestyle choices, and individual health conditions. In your case, you mentioned that you have been consistently taking oral contraceptives, which can significantly influence your menstrual cycle.

1. Short Menstrual Cycle and Bleeding: The fact that your menstrual period lasted about seven days and then abruptly stopped after consuming alcohol raises some questions. It is unlikely that the short duration of your menstrual bleeding is due to implantation bleeding, which typically occurs around 6-12 days after conception and is usually much lighter than a regular period. Since you had your last sexual intercourse on September 7 and your period started on September 20, it is unlikely that the bleeding you experienced was related to implantation, especially since you tested negative for pregnancy on September 24.

2. Causes of Short Menstrual Cycles: If your menstrual cycle is consistently shorter than the average 28 days, it could be due to several factors:
- Hormonal Contraceptives: Oral contraceptives can alter the natural menstrual cycle, often leading to lighter and shorter periods. Some women experience a reduction in menstrual flow and duration while on the pill.

- Stress and Lifestyle Factors: High levels of stress, significant changes in weight, or intense physical activity can also affect your menstrual cycle. Alcohol consumption, particularly in large amounts, can impact hormonal balance and may lead to changes in your cycle.

- Health Conditions: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other hormonal imbalances can lead to irregularities in menstrual cycles.

3. Next Steps: If you are concerned about the changes in your menstrual cycle or if you experience any other symptoms such as severe pain, unusual discharge, or significant changes in your cycle, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend:
- Blood Tests: To check hormone levels and rule out any underlying conditions.

- Ultrasound: To assess the reproductive organs for any abnormalities.

- Review of Medications: To ensure that your contraceptive method is appropriate for your health needs.

4. Monitoring Your Cycle: Keeping track of your menstrual cycle, including the duration, flow, and any associated symptoms, can provide valuable information for your healthcare provider. Apps and journals can help you monitor these changes effectively.

In summary, while your short menstrual cycle and the abrupt cessation of bleeding may be concerning, they can often be attributed to the use of hormonal contraceptives and lifestyle factors. However, if you have any doubts or experience additional symptoms, seeking medical advice is the best course of action to ensure your reproductive health is managed appropriately.
