Post-circumcision care

Hello doctor, it has been about 2 months since I had my circumcision, and the stitches have completely dissolved.
However, the swelling at the junction of the glans and the shaft of the penis has not fully resolved, and there is still a ring of swelling.
What methods can I use to expedite the reduction of the swelling, or do you have any recommendations? Is it safe to engage in sexual intercourse while experiencing this swelling?

Amai, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/10/04

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: As long as the wound has healed, sexual activity can be resumed even with some swelling.
The swelling should gradually subside; however, if it persists for too long, medication may be needed to improve circulation.
Wishing you good health.

Post-circumcision recovery can vary significantly from person to person, but there are some general guidelines and tips that can help you navigate this period, especially concerning swelling and sexual activity.

Firstly, it's important to understand that some degree of swelling (edema) is quite common after circumcision. This swelling can persist for several weeks, and in some cases, it may take a couple of months to fully resolve. The area where the head of the penis (glans) meets the shaft can be particularly prone to swelling due to the surgical procedure and the healing process.
To help reduce swelling, consider the following tips:
1. Cold Compresses: Applying a cold compress to the area can help reduce swelling and provide relief. Make sure to wrap ice or a cold pack in a cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin, which can cause frostbite.

2. Elevation: When resting, try to keep the area elevated. This can help reduce blood flow to the area and minimize swelling.

3. Avoid Irritation: Wear loose-fitting underwear and avoid tight clothing that may irritate the area. This can help prevent additional swelling and discomfort.

4. Hydration and Diet: Staying well-hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet can support your body’s healing process. Foods rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, such as fruits and vegetables, may also be beneficial.

5. Gentle Massage: Once the area has healed sufficiently and with your doctor's approval, gentle massage around the swollen area may promote circulation and help reduce swelling.

6. Follow-Up with Your Doctor: If the swelling persists or worsens, it's crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They can assess whether the swelling is a normal part of the healing process or if there are underlying issues that need to be addressed.

Regarding sexual activity, it is generally advisable to wait until you have fully healed before engaging in sexual intercourse. Engaging in sexual activity while still experiencing swelling can lead to discomfort and may impede the healing process. If you feel any pain or discomfort during an erection or sexual activity, it’s best to stop and consult your doctor.

In terms of sexual function, many men report changes in sensitivity and pleasure after circumcision. The glans, which is usually covered by the foreskin, may become more sensitive initially after the procedure. Over time, many find that sensitivity normalizes, and they can enjoy sexual activity without discomfort.

If you are experiencing persistent swelling or discomfort, or if you have concerns about your sexual health post-circumcision, it is essential to consult with a urologist or your primary care physician. They can provide personalized advice and treatment options based on your specific situation.

In summary, while some swelling after circumcision is normal, it’s important to take steps to manage it and consult with your healthcare provider if you have concerns. Waiting for full healing before resuming sexual activity is advisable to ensure comfort and proper recovery.
