Changes in stool consistency?

Hello doctor, I used to have a bowel movement every two days, but about a month ago I started taking probiotics and now I almost have a daily bowel movement.
Sometimes the stool is more moist and elongated, and at times I experience diarrhea.
However, I've noticed that my stool is not as thick as it used to be, about the size of my thumb.
Is this normal?

Hello, if you have concerns, it is recommended to temporarily discontinue the use of probiotics and, if necessary, check for occult blood in the stool.

Changes in bowel movements can be a significant indicator of digestive health, especially when introducing new dietary supplements like probiotics. Your experience of transitioning from having bowel movements every two days to nearly daily after starting probiotics is not uncommon. Probiotics are live microorganisms that can provide health benefits, particularly for gut health, but they can also lead to changes in bowel habits.

When you begin taking probiotics, your gut microbiota—the community of microorganisms living in your intestines—can undergo a shift. This shift can lead to increased bowel frequency, changes in stool consistency, and even symptoms like gas or bloating. The fact that you are experiencing softer, sometimes mucus-like stools, and occasional diarrhea suggests that your digestive system is adjusting to the new probiotic regimen.

It's important to note that the consistency and frequency of bowel movements can vary widely among individuals. According to the Bristol Stool Scale, which categorizes stool types, a healthy stool can range from type 1 (hard lumps) to type 7 (watery, no solid pieces). Types 3 and 4 are generally considered ideal, as they are easier to pass and indicate a well-functioning digestive system. If your stools are becoming softer and more frequent, they may be leaning towards types 5 or 6, which can be normal for some individuals, especially when adjusting to probiotics.

However, if you notice that your stools are consistently watery or if you experience any alarming symptoms such as significant abdominal pain, blood in your stool, or weight loss, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional. These could be signs of an underlying condition that may require further investigation.

In your case, since you mentioned that your stools are no longer as thick as they used to be, this could be a result of the probiotics altering your gut flora and affecting how your body processes food. Some people find that probiotics can lead to looser stools, especially if they are not used to consuming them regularly. If you are concerned about the changes, consider the following:
1. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of your bowel movements, noting any changes in frequency, consistency, and any accompanying symptoms like discomfort or bloating.

2. Adjust Probiotic Intake: If you feel that the probiotics are causing more discomfort than benefit, you might consider reducing the dosage or taking a break from them to see if your bowel habits return to your previous pattern.

3. Dietary Considerations: Alongside probiotics, consider your overall diet. Increased fiber intake from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can also affect bowel movements. Ensure you are drinking enough water, as hydration plays a crucial role in digestion and stool consistency.

4. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the changes in your bowel habits persist or worsen, or if you have any concerns about your digestive health, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend further tests or adjustments to your diet or probiotic regimen.

In summary, while changes in bowel movements after starting probiotics can be normal, it's essential to listen to your body and seek medical advice if you have any concerns. Your digestive health is vital, and understanding how your body reacts to dietary changes is key to maintaining it.
