Nasal allergies

The nose has allergies, with one side being congested while the other side is clear for extended periods, sometimes alternating between sides.
This does not only occur during sleep; it happens regularly.
Sleep is usually deep, and in the morning, there is sometimes a slight runny nose, which is clear rather than yellow.

Dr. Ji Zhaoyun reply Otolaryngology

Hello, the primary triggers for allergic rhinitis are related to individual constitution and environmental allergens.
If one parent has allergic rhinitis, the likelihood of their children developing the condition increases fourfold.
Treatment typically begins with oral medications and nasal sprays, and surgery may be considered if necessary.
The main medications include oral antihistamines and intranasal corticosteroids used in combination.
Depending on the situation, local antihistamines/vasoconstrictors or oral leukotriene receptor antagonists may also be utilized.
If symptoms do not improve with medication and there are significant structural obstructions, such as a deviated septum, turbinate hypertrophy, or nasal valve narrowing, appropriate surgical intervention can help.

To avoid allergens, it is advisable to reduce irritants by wearing masks, regularly cleaning bedding, avoiding extreme fluctuations in temperature/humidity, and minimizing exposure to air pollution.
Although allergic rhinitis can be bothersome, with appropriate medications or combined surgical approaches, and by avoiding allergens and irritants, it can be well-controlled, significantly enhancing quality of life.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely,
Dr.
Chi Chao-Yun,
Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taichung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Nasal allergies, commonly referred to as allergic rhinitis, can significantly impact your quality of life. The symptoms you describe—persistent nasal congestion that alternates between nostrils, clear nasal discharge, and occasional sneezing—are typical manifestations of this condition. Understanding the underlying mechanisms and management strategies can help alleviate your symptoms and improve your overall well-being.

Symptoms of Nasal Allergies
1. Nasal Congestion: This is often the most bothersome symptom. It occurs due to inflammation of the nasal mucosa, which can lead to swelling and blockage of the nasal passages. The congestion may switch sides, which is a common characteristic of allergic rhinitis.

2. Clear Nasal Discharge: Unlike infections that typically produce yellow or green mucus, allergic rhinitis usually results in clear nasal discharge. This is due to the body's immune response to allergens, which causes the nasal membranes to produce excess mucus.

3. Sneezing and Itching: Sneezing is a reflex action triggered by irritation in the nasal passages. It is often accompanied by itching in the nose, throat, or eyes, which can be particularly bothersome.

4. Postnasal Drip: This occurs when excess mucus accumulates in the back of the throat, leading to a sensation of mucus dripping down, which can cause throat irritation and coughing.

5. Fatigue: Chronic nasal congestion can lead to poor sleep quality, resulting in daytime fatigue and difficulty concentrating.

Management Tips
1. Avoid Triggers: Identifying and avoiding allergens is crucial. Common triggers include pollen, dust mites, mold, pet dander, and certain foods. Keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons, using air purifiers, and regularly cleaning your living space can help reduce exposure.

2. Medications: Over-the-counter antihistamines (like loratadine or cetirizine) can help relieve symptoms by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical released during allergic reactions. Nasal corticosteroids (like fluticasone or mometasone) are also effective in reducing inflammation and nasal congestion. Decongestants may provide temporary relief but should not be used for extended periods due to the risk of rebound congestion.

3. Saline Nasal Irrigation: Rinsing your nasal passages with saline solution can help clear allergens and mucus, providing relief from congestion. This can be done using a neti pot or saline spray.

4. Allergy Testing: If your symptoms are persistent and significantly impact your life, consider consulting an allergist for testing. Identifying specific allergens can help tailor your management plan.

5. Immunotherapy: For individuals with severe allergies, allergy shots (immunotherapy) may be an option. This treatment involves gradually exposing the body to increasing amounts of the allergen to build tolerance over time.

6. Lifestyle Modifications: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can also help manage symptoms. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate hydration can support your immune system and overall health.

7. Consult a Specialist: If your symptoms persist despite these measures, it may be beneficial to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist or an allergist. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation and recommend further treatment options, including potential surgical interventions if structural issues in the nasal passages are contributing to your symptoms.

Conclusion
Nasal allergies can be a chronic and frustrating condition, but with the right understanding and management strategies, you can significantly improve your quality of life. By identifying triggers, utilizing appropriate medications, and considering lifestyle changes, you can take control of your symptoms. If necessary, seek professional advice to explore more advanced treatment options tailored to your specific needs.
