Nasal wing swelling and pain?

The right nostril wing suddenly swelled up yesterday and appears a bit red.
It doesn't look very obvious, but it hurts when pressed or when the nostrils are flared, and it feels hard to the touch.

Lin, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/10/22

Dr. Ji Zhaoyun reply Otolaryngology

Hello, the issue you mentioned may be due to inflammation of the nasal vestibular follicles, inflammation of the nasolabial cyst, or other causes.
It is recommended that you seek evaluation from an otolaryngologist if necessary.
Wishing you peace and good health.

Swelling and pain in the nostril, particularly when localized to one side, can be caused by a variety of conditions. The symptoms you describe—sudden swelling, redness, and pain upon pressure—suggest a few potential causes that should be considered.

1. Nasal Furuncle: One common cause of swelling and pain in the nostril is a nasal furuncle, which is an infection of the hair follicle in the nasal vestibule. This can occur due to bacteria, often Staphylococcus aureus, and typically presents as a painful, swollen bump that may be red and tender to the touch. Furuncles can be associated with systemic symptoms like fever if the infection is severe.

2. Nasal Vestibulitis: This condition is characterized by inflammation of the nasal vestibule, often due to bacterial infection or irritation. It can result from excessive nose-picking, nasal trauma, or the presence of foreign bodies. Symptoms include redness, swelling, and pain, particularly when touching the area.

3. Allergic Reaction: Allergies can cause localized swelling and redness in the nasal area. If you have been exposed to allergens such as pollen, dust, or pet dander, this could lead to inflammation and discomfort.

4. Sinusitis: While sinusitis typically presents with more generalized symptoms, localized swelling can occur if the infection is particularly severe or if there is a blockage in the nasal passages. This may be accompanied by other symptoms such as nasal congestion, discharge, or facial pain.

5. Insect Bite or Allergic Reaction: An insect bite or an allergic reaction to something that has come into contact with the skin around the nostril can also cause localized swelling and pain.

Treatment Options
- Warm Compresses: Applying a warm compress to the affected area can help reduce swelling and alleviate pain. This can promote drainage if there is an infection.

- Topical Antibiotics: If a bacterial infection is suspected, topical antibiotics may be prescribed to help clear the infection. Avoid squeezing or picking at the area, as this can worsen the infection.

- Oral Antibiotics: In cases of more severe infection, oral antibiotics may be necessary. It’s important to consult a healthcare provider for an appropriate prescription.

- Antihistamines: If the swelling is due to an allergic reaction, over-the-counter antihistamines can help alleviate symptoms.

- Nasal Saline Rinse: Using a saline nasal rinse can help clear irritants and allergens from the nasal passages, providing relief from symptoms.

- Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that irritants or allergens are contributing to your symptoms, try to avoid exposure to these triggers.

When to Seek Medical Attention
If the swelling and pain persist, worsen, or are accompanied by fever, significant drainage, or difficulty breathing, it is important to seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment.
In summary, while there are several potential causes for the swelling and pain in your nostril, many can be effectively managed with appropriate care. However, if symptoms do not improve or if you have concerns about the severity of your condition, do not hesitate to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and treatment.
