There is a sensation of tightness and warmth around the left rib area?
Hello Doctor: About six years ago, I felt a warm, tight, and uncomfortable sensation under my left rib cage in the upper left abdomen.
At that time, I noticed that the lowest rib on the left side seemed swollen.
However, after a few weeks, the warm, tight, and uncomfortable feeling disappeared, but the lowest rib on the left side remained slightly swollen, and it is still swollen to this day.
Over the years, I haven't paid much attention to it since it hasn't affected my daily life.
However, three weeks ago, the tight and warm sensation under my left rib cage returned.
I experience a noticeable warmth when bending to the left side, and when I stretch upwards, I feel tightness in the skin around the lowest rib on the left side.
Sometimes, I also feel warmth and tingling in the upper left back.
I would like to know what could be causing this and why the lowest rib on the left side has been swollen for several years.
This situation is causing me anxiety and concern.
Thank you, Doctor, for your patience in reading and responding.
Sincerely, Yi Yi.

It could be periostitis, intercostal neuralgia, or a rib tumor.
I recommend that you visit the fracture clinic for an X-ray examination.

Dear 宜宜,
Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding the persistent left rib pain and swelling you've been experiencing. Based on your description, there are several potential causes for the symptoms you're experiencing, and it's important to consider them carefully.
Firstly, the sensation of heat, tightness, and swelling around the left rib area could be indicative of a few different conditions. One possibility is costochondritis, which is inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum. This condition can cause localized pain and tenderness, and it may be exacerbated by certain movements, such as bending or stretching. The fact that you have experienced this sensation intermittently over the years suggests that it could be a chronic issue.
Another potential cause could be related to muscular issues, such as muscle strain or tension in the intercostal muscles (the muscles between the ribs). This can occur due to poor posture, repetitive movements, or even stress, which can lead to muscle tightness and discomfort. The feeling of tightness and heat you describe could be a result of muscle tension in that area.
Additionally, the persistent swelling of the rib area you mentioned could be due to a benign condition such as a rib or cartilage deformity, or it could be related to a previous injury that may have caused some residual swelling. It's also important to consider the possibility of a more serious underlying condition, such as a hernia or even a localized infection, although these would typically present with more pronounced symptoms.
Given that you've had these symptoms for several years without significant change, and considering the recent exacerbation of your symptoms, it would be prudent to seek a thorough evaluation from a healthcare professional. A physical examination, along with imaging studies such as an X-ray or MRI, may be necessary to assess the rib structure and surrounding tissues. This will help to rule out any serious conditions and provide a clearer understanding of the underlying cause of your symptoms.
In the meantime, you might find relief through conservative measures such as applying heat or ice to the affected area, practicing good posture, and engaging in gentle stretching exercises to alleviate muscle tension. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications may also help reduce pain and swelling, but it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication.
In summary, while there are several potential causes for your left rib pain and swelling, a thorough medical evaluation is necessary to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment. Please do not hesitate to seek medical attention, especially if your symptoms worsen or if you experience new symptoms such as difficulty breathing, significant swelling, or changes in your overall health.
Wishing you the best of health,
