Seeing a white light at the inner corner of the eye?
Hello doctor, I had a retinal examination at the beginning of the month, and the doctor said everything was fine.
However, recently I've noticed that when I look outward, I can see an arc-shaped white line at the inner corner of my eye, but when I look directly at the position of the white line, it disappears.

More Info
Seeing arc-shaped white lines at the inner corner of your eye can be concerning, especially if you have recently had a retinal examination that showed no issues. The appearance of these lines could be attributed to several factors, and while it may not necessarily indicate a serious problem, it is essential to monitor the situation and consult with an eye care professional if symptoms persist or worsen.
Firstly, the arc-shaped white lines you are observing could be related to a phenomenon known as "visual artifacts." These artifacts can occur due to various reasons, including eye fatigue, changes in lighting, or even the presence of floaters in the vitreous humor of the eye. Floaters are tiny clumps of gel or cells that can cast shadows on the retina, leading to the perception of lines or shapes in your vision. While floaters are common and usually harmless, they can sometimes be associated with more serious conditions, such as retinal tears or detachments, especially if they are accompanied by flashes of light or a sudden increase in their number.
Another possibility is that the white lines could be a result of a visual distortion caused by refractive errors, such as astigmatism. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is irregularly shaped, leading to blurred or distorted vision. If you have not had a recent eye exam specifically focusing on your refractive error, it may be beneficial to have your vision assessed to determine if corrective lenses could help alleviate the issue.
Additionally, the appearance of these lines could be related to ocular migraines, which can cause temporary visual disturbances, including zigzag patterns or flashes of light. These symptoms typically resolve within a short period, but if you experience them frequently or they are accompanied by headaches, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
Given that you have already had a thorough examination of your retina, it is reassuring that no immediate issues were identified. However, if the arc-shaped white lines persist, worsen, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, changes in vision, or flashes of light, it is crucial to seek further evaluation. Regular follow-ups with your eye care provider can help monitor any changes in your vision and ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
In summary, while the appearance of arc-shaped white lines at the inner corner of your eye may not be an immediate cause for alarm, it is essential to remain vigilant. Factors such as visual artifacts, refractive errors, or ocular migraines could be contributing to your symptoms. If you notice any changes or if the symptoms persist, do not hesitate to reach out to your eye care professional for further evaluation and guidance. Your eye health is paramount, and staying proactive about any changes in your vision is the best approach to maintaining it.
