Removal of dental bone screws after a car accident?
It has been over a month since I had a car accident.
This Friday, I am scheduled to have the four gum pins used to stabilize my mandible removed.
However, one of the pins has become embedded in the tissue of my lower lip and cannot be accessed.
Will it be necessary to incise the tissue to remove it? If so, will anesthesia be administered for the procedure? Thank you, Dr.
Huang, for your assistance.

Dear Mr.
Zai,
Hello! In order to understand the clinical situation, it is important to know if the lower lip is covering the area and if it will need to be incised for removal.
Generally, anesthesia will be required for this procedure.
Please communicate thoroughly with your physician.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health!
Sincerely,
Dr.

More Info
After a car accident, it is common for individuals to undergo various medical procedures, including the removal of gum pins or dental fixtures used to stabilize the jaw. In your case, it sounds like you have had gum pins placed to support your lower jaw following an injury. The process of removing these pins can vary based on several factors, including how they were placed, the healing process, and any complications that may have arisen, such as the pin becoming embedded in the tissue of your lip.
When you go for the removal of the gum pins, the dentist or oral surgeon will first assess the situation. If one of the pins has become encapsulated by the tissue, they may need to make a small incision to access it. This is not uncommon, especially if there has been significant swelling or healing around the area.
Regarding anesthesia, it is very likely that local anesthesia will be administered before the procedure. This is to ensure that you do not feel pain during the removal process. The dentist will typically inject a local anesthetic into the area around the gum pins, numbing the site and making the procedure more comfortable for you. In some cases, if you are particularly anxious or if the procedure is expected to be more complicated, sedation options may be discussed.
After the removal of the gum pins, you can expect some post-operative care instructions. This may include recommendations for pain management, such as over-the-counter pain relievers, and guidelines on how to care for the surgical site to promote healing and prevent infection. It is also important to follow any dietary restrictions that may be advised, especially if your jaw is still healing.
In terms of recovery, most patients can return to their normal activities relatively quickly, but it is essential to listen to your body and avoid any strenuous activities that could jeopardize the healing process. If you experience excessive pain, swelling, or any signs of infection (such as fever or discharge), you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.
In summary, the removal of gum pins after a car accident is a procedure that can be performed safely and effectively, even if complications arise. With proper anesthesia and care, you should be able to undergo this procedure with minimal discomfort. Always communicate openly with your healthcare provider about any concerns you may have, and do not hesitate to ask questions about the procedure, recovery, and any other related issues. Your health and comfort should always be the priority.
