Pregnancy date
Hello, doctor.
During the examination on October 19, it was found that I am five weeks pregnant.
However, I had sexual intercourse with a male friend on September 23, where there was only a brief thrusting at first, but later, we used a condom throughout the entire act until ejaculation.
On September 25, I had intercourse with my husband without a condom.
Since getting married almost two years ago, we have also not used condoms, but I have not become pregnant.
My husband has been divorced and has one child, so his sperm is normal.
I am very concerned that I might have become pregnant on September 23.
Xiao Ning, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/10/26
Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the failure rate of condoms as a contraceptive method is over 5%, and if the intervals between sexual intercourse are too close, it may be difficult to determine the situation.
DNA testing might be the only way to confirm.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

To determine the likely date of conception and clarify your pregnancy timeline, we need to consider a few key factors regarding your menstrual cycle and the timing of your sexual encounters.
First, pregnancy is typically calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). In your case, if you are currently five weeks pregnant as of your October 19 check-up, this would imply that your LMP was approximately September 12. This is because pregnancy is usually counted as 40 weeks from the LMP, and the first two weeks are considered part of the pregnancy even though conception has not yet occurred.
Given your sexual encounters, you mentioned having intercourse on September 23 with a male friend, where a condom was used, and then on September 25 with your husband without protection. The likelihood of conception occurring from these encounters depends on several factors, including the timing of ovulation.
In a typical 28-day menstrual cycle, ovulation occurs around 14 days after the first day of your last period. However, since you did not specify your cycle length, if we assume a regular cycle of about 28 days, ovulation would likely have occurred around September 26. Sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days, which means that if you ovulated on September 26, sperm from intercourse on September 25 could potentially lead to conception.
Now, regarding the encounter on September 23, if you were using a condom correctly, the chances of conception from that encounter are significantly reduced. However, if there was any breakage or slippage of the condom, there could be a risk of pregnancy from that encounter as well.
Given these details, it seems more likely that conception occurred from the encounter on September 25, especially since you have been trying to conceive without success in the past. The timing aligns more closely with your ovulation window.
If you are feeling anxious about the possibility of being pregnant from the September 23 encounter, it may be helpful to discuss your concerns with your healthcare provider. They can provide you with more personalized advice and may suggest an early ultrasound to assess the gestational age of the fetus, which can help clarify the timing of conception.
In summary, while it is possible to conceive from either encounter, the evidence suggests that the encounter on September 25 is more likely to have resulted in your current pregnancy. If you have any further concerns or questions, especially regarding your health or the health of your pregnancy, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for guidance.
