Left radial fracture after removal of the metal pin?
I am a young woman who had a car accident last year, which resulted in the placement of steel pins and plates.
After a year and a half, I decided to have them removed.
However, it has been two weeks since the removal, and my thumb is still numb, and there is a hard swelling on the front of my hand.
I am currently waiting for the nerve conduction study results, but is this situation normal?

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics
The current condition is relatively normal.
After the wrist fracture surgery, there are times when the skin feels numb, which is due to the superficial nerves in the skin being stretched.
Most of the time, this will recover after a period, so it can be monitored.

After undergoing surgery for the removal of hardware (such as plates and screws) following a radius fracture, it is not uncommon to experience numbness and swelling in the affected area. Your symptoms of thumb numbness and localized swelling two weeks post-removal can be attributed to several factors related to the surgical procedure and the healing process.
Firstly, the numbness you are experiencing could be due to nerve irritation or damage that may have occurred during the initial fracture or the subsequent surgery. The radial nerve, which runs near the radius bone, can sometimes be affected during these procedures. If the nerve was compressed or stretched during the surgery, it may take time for it to heal and for sensation to return to normal. Nerve healing can be a slow process, often taking weeks to months, depending on the extent of the injury and the individual’s healing capacity.
The hard swelling you mentioned could be a result of scar tissue formation or localized inflammation. After surgery, the body initiates a healing response that can lead to swelling and the development of scar tissue. This is a normal part of the recovery process, but if the swelling persists or worsens, it may indicate complications such as infection or improper healing.
It is also important to consider that after hardware removal, the surrounding soft tissues, including muscles and tendons, may need time to adjust and heal. The surgical site can be sensitive, and the surrounding tissues may be inflamed or tight, contributing to discomfort and altered sensation.
While waiting for your nerve conduction study results, it is advisable to monitor your symptoms closely. If the numbness does not improve or if you experience increased pain, weakness, or changes in color or temperature in your hand, you should contact your healthcare provider promptly. They may recommend physical therapy to help improve mobility and reduce stiffness, as well as to promote nerve healing through targeted exercises.
In terms of recovery expectations, it is essential to be patient. Nerve recovery can be unpredictable, and while some individuals may see improvement within weeks, others may take several months. Engaging in gentle range-of-motion exercises, as tolerated, can help maintain function and prevent stiffness in the wrist and hand.
In summary, while your current symptoms of numbness and swelling after hardware removal are not uncommon, it is crucial to keep an open line of communication with your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific situation and help ensure that your recovery progresses smoothly. If you have any concerns about your symptoms or recovery, do not hesitate to reach out for further evaluation and support.

After a comminuted fracture of the radius, why is there no sensation, tingling, or numbness in the ulnar nerve post-surgery, but it starts to feel tingling and numbness after manual relaxation of the hand? Is it possible to perform an arthroscopy?
Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics
Arthroscopy may not be very helpful; it might be worth considering a nerve conduction study to identify which nerve is problematic. After a radial head fracture, the radial nerve passes nearby, and it is less likely to affect the ulnar nerve.[Read More] Understanding Nerve Sensation Changes After Radial Head Fracture Surgery
