Mole removal
If a mole is located on the face, will laser treatment harm the facial bones? This is the only dark mole on my face, and I don't particularly like it.
I hope to choose a treatment that leaves no scars.
Is that possible? If so, please let me know.
Also, does laser treatment hurt? How long does the treatment process take? Thank you for your response!

Dr. Zheng Lizhen reply Dermatology
The treatment of moles depends on their size, location, depth, and whether they are raised or not.
Even when using laser treatment, the choice of laser type is determined by these factors.
Some areas may leave scars while others may not, so a personal consultation is necessary to decide on the appropriate method for mole removal.
The costs vary depending on the treatment method.
During laser treatment, some pain may be experienced, but pain tolerance varies from person to person; however, most individuals find it manageable.
If someone is particularly concerned about pain, a local anesthetic injection can be administered, or a topical anesthetic cream can be applied 30 minutes prior to the procedure.
Moles typically do not grow deep enough to reach the bone, and as long as you consult a qualified physician who operates with the appropriate dosage, there is no need to worry about laser treatment harming the facial bones.

When it comes to the removal of moles, particularly those located on the face, laser treatment is often considered a safe and effective option. Many individuals seek this method due to its potential for minimal scarring compared to traditional surgical excision. The primary concern regarding laser treatment is whether it could cause damage to the underlying structures, such as the bone, especially when the mole is situated on the face. However, it is important to note that laser treatments are designed to target the pigment in the mole without affecting the deeper layers of skin or underlying bone.
Laser mole removal works by using focused light energy to break down the pigment in the mole. The procedure typically involves the use of a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort, and many patients report only mild sensations during treatment. The duration of the procedure can vary depending on the size and depth of the mole, but it usually takes only a few minutes.
One of the significant advantages of laser treatment is its ability to reduce the risk of scarring. Unlike traditional excision, which involves cutting out the mole and stitching the skin back together, laser treatment often results in less trauma to the surrounding skin. This can lead to a more aesthetically pleasing outcome, especially on the face, where scarring can be more noticeable. However, it is essential to have realistic expectations, as some individuals may still experience slight discoloration or textural changes in the skin after the procedure.
Regarding pain, while some discomfort may be felt during the procedure, it is generally well-tolerated. The use of topical anesthetics can significantly reduce any pain associated with the treatment. Post-treatment, patients may experience mild redness or swelling, which typically resolves within a few days.
It is also crucial to consider the qualifications of the practitioner performing the procedure. Choosing a board-certified dermatologist or a qualified plastic surgeon with experience in laser treatments can greatly enhance the safety and effectiveness of the procedure. They can assess the mole's characteristics and determine the most appropriate laser technology to use, ensuring optimal results.
In conclusion, laser treatment for mole removal is a safe and effective option that minimizes the risk of scarring, particularly on the face. The procedure is quick, generally painless, and can be performed in an outpatient setting. However, it is essential to consult with a qualified medical professional to discuss your specific case, evaluate the mole, and determine the best treatment plan tailored to your needs. This will help ensure that you achieve the desired cosmetic outcome while maintaining the health and integrity of your skin.
