Can you get pregnant again after an abortion?

On August 25 and August 27, I took RU486, and the embryo was expelled.
From August 27 to September 2, I experienced bleeding and discharge.
My first menstrual period came from September 27 to October 3.
I forgot to take a pregnancy test, but on the mornings of October 16 and 17, I noticed a small amount of brown discharge.
On October 18, I started bleeding again, similar to a menstrual flow, which lasted until October 22.
On October 23 and 24, my boyfriend accidentally ejaculated inside me.
On November 9, I took a pregnancy test and saw two lines.
Am I pregnant? My previous menstrual cycle was approximately 32-33 days.
Thank you for your response, doctor.

Hong, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/11/10

More Info

Experiencing pregnancy after an abortion can be a complex situation, and understanding your menstrual cycle is crucial in determining your fertility status. Based on the information you provided, it seems you had a medical abortion using RU486 on August 25 and 27, followed by a period of bleeding and discharge. Your first menstrual cycle after the abortion occurred from September 27 to October 3, which is a significant indicator of your body's return to its pre-pregnancy state.

To address your question about whether you could be pregnant again after your recent abortion, let's break down the timeline and the implications:
1. Menstrual Cycle Understanding: After an abortion, it is common for women to experience changes in their menstrual cycle. The first period after an abortion can be irregular, and it may take a few cycles for your body to normalize. Since your cycle was previously around 32-33 days, it’s essential to track your cycle closely to understand when ovulation occurs.

2. Ovulation and Fertility: After your first period post-abortion, ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before your next expected period. If you had your period from September 27 to October 3, your next ovulation would likely have been around mid-October. If you had unprotected intercourse on October 23 and 24, it is possible that sperm could have fertilized an egg if you were ovulating at that time.

3. Pregnancy Test: You mentioned taking a pregnancy test on November 9 and receiving a positive result (two lines). This indicates that you are indeed pregnant. Home pregnancy tests are generally reliable when taken after a missed period, so if you tested positive, it is likely that you are pregnant.

4. Timing of Pregnancy: Given your cycle length and the timing of your sexual activity, it aligns with the possibility of conception occurring shortly after your first menstrual cycle post-abortion. The body can become fertile again quite quickly after an abortion, sometimes even before the first period.

5. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: It is essential to follow up with your healthcare provider to confirm the pregnancy through a blood test or ultrasound. They can also provide guidance on what to expect during this pregnancy, especially considering your recent abortion.

6. Emotional and Physical Health: It’s also important to consider the emotional and physical aspects of becoming pregnant again after an abortion. Each pregnancy can bring different feelings and experiences, and it’s crucial to ensure you have the support you need.

In summary, yes, you can get pregnant after an abortion, and based on your timeline, it appears you are pregnant again. Monitoring your cycle and understanding your ovulation can help you navigate your fertility. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and care during this time.
