Broken braces?
Doctor, I have been wearing clear aligners for a while, but recently one of them broke! The dentist at the clinic I originally visited said that the next set of aligners hasn't arrived yet and didn't provide me with a backup.
I'm currently without an aligner; will my teeth shift back? Is the correct standard operating procedure to wait until the new aligners arrive? I feel like I'm being neglected!

Dr. Zhu Guanyu reply Dentistry
Hello: I would like to know which type of invisible aligner system you are using.
It is recommended to return to your original treating dentist to discuss whether there is a need to wear retainers during this period or if there are other necessary measures.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

When dealing with a broken clear aligner, it's important to take immediate and appropriate steps to ensure that your orthodontic treatment continues effectively. Here’s a comprehensive guide on what to do if your clear aligners break, along with some expert advice.
Immediate Steps to Take
1. Assess the Damage: First, determine the extent of the damage to your aligner. If it's just a small crack or a minor chip, you may still be able to wear it temporarily. However, if the aligner is broken into multiple pieces or is severely damaged, it’s best not to wear it.
2. Contact Your Orthodontist: Reach out to your orthodontist or the dental office where you received your treatment as soon as possible. Explain the situation and ask for guidance. They may have specific protocols in place for such occurrences.
3. Follow Their Instructions: Your orthodontist may advise you to continue wearing the damaged aligner until your next set arrives, especially if it’s still functional. They might also suggest switching to the next aligner in your series if it’s been a sufficient amount of time since you started wearing the current one.
4. Avoid Delaying Treatment: If you have to wait for a replacement aligner, it’s crucial to minimize the time your teeth are not being moved. Prolonged periods without an aligner can lead to teeth shifting back to their original positions, which can hinder your overall treatment progress.
What to Expect
- Teeth Shifting: If you go without an aligner for an extended period, there is a risk that your teeth may start to shift back toward their original positions. This is why it’s essential to communicate with your orthodontist about the best course of action.
- Replacement Aligners: Most orthodontic practices have a process for replacing lost or broken aligners. Depending on your specific treatment plan, they may be able to expedite the creation of a new aligner.
Preventive Measures
1. Have a Backup Plan: In the future, ask your orthodontist if they can provide a backup aligner or an extra set, especially if you are nearing the end of your current set. This can help mitigate issues if something goes wrong.
2. Handle with Care: Be cautious when removing and cleaning your aligners. Use a soft cloth or case to store them when not in use to prevent accidental damage.
3. Regular Check-ins: Schedule regular appointments with your orthodontist to monitor your progress and address any issues before they become significant problems.
Conclusion
In summary, if your clear aligner breaks, assess the damage, contact your orthodontist immediately, and follow their instructions carefully. It’s crucial to minimize any gaps in your treatment to prevent your teeth from shifting. Always communicate openly with your orthodontist about your concerns and the timeline for receiving new aligners. Remember, proactive communication and care can help ensure that your orthodontic journey remains on track.
