The areola is itchy and has discharge?
I have a yellowish discharge from my right areola that is wet and itchy.
When the discharge dries, it causes my underwear to stick to my breast, and when I pull my underwear away, the areola has peeling skin.
What could be the cause of this?

The openings of some glands above the areola may occasionally secrete some mucus, which is a normal phenomenon and should not be a cause for concern.

More Info
Itchy areola with yellow discharge can be concerning and may indicate several underlying conditions. The symptoms you describe—itchiness, yellow discharge, and peeling skin—could be attributed to a few different causes, which I will outline below.
1. Infection: One of the most common causes of yellow discharge from the areola is an infection, such as a bacterial or fungal infection. Bacterial infections can lead to conditions like mastitis, which is an inflammation of breast tissue that can cause pain, swelling, and discharge. Fungal infections, such as candidiasis, can also occur, especially in warm, moist areas of the body. These infections can cause itching and discharge, and they may require antifungal or antibiotic treatment.
2. Eczema or Dermatitis: Another possibility is that you may be experiencing a form of dermatitis, such as contact dermatitis or eczema. This condition can cause the skin around the areola to become inflamed, itchy, and flaky. Allergic reactions to soaps, detergents, or fabrics can trigger contact dermatitis. In such cases, avoiding irritants and using topical corticosteroids or moisturizers may help alleviate symptoms.
3. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, particularly those related to the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, or breastfeeding, can lead to changes in the breast tissue, including discharge and sensitivity. If you are experiencing other symptoms related to hormonal changes, it may be worth discussing this with your healthcare provider.
4. Paget's Disease of the Nipple: Although less common, Paget's disease is a type of breast cancer that can present with symptoms similar to what you are experiencing, including itching, discharge, and changes in the skin of the nipple and areola. If the symptoms persist or worsen, it is crucial to seek medical evaluation to rule out this condition.
5. Other Skin Conditions: Conditions such as psoriasis or folliculitis can also affect the areola and cause itching and discharge. These conditions may require specific treatments depending on their nature.
Recommendations:
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given the symptoms you are experiencing, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider, preferably a dermatologist or a breast specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a culture of the discharge, to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.
- Maintain Hygiene: Keeping the area clean and dry can help prevent infections. Use mild, unscented soap and avoid harsh chemicals or irritants.
- Avoid Scratching: While it may be tempting to scratch the itchy area, doing so can worsen irritation and increase the risk of infection.
- Moisturize: If the skin is dry and peeling, applying a gentle moisturizer may help soothe the area.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including the color and consistency of the discharge, any new lumps, or changes in the skin. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.
In summary, while there are several potential causes for itchy areola with yellow discharge, it is crucial to seek professional medical advice for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure proper care.
