Tightness in the lower abdomen?
Hello Doctor: I would like to ask you about some symptoms I've been experiencing.
Recently, I've felt a tightness in my lower abdomen, and after urinating, I have the urge to urinate again shortly after, even though there is actually no urine.
Additionally, I occasionally feel a bit of pain in my lower right abdomen.
Could you please explain why this might be happening? I'm also unsure if this is related to the fact that I masturbated three nights ago, although I did wash my hands beforehand.
Thank you for your assistance!

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the tightness in your lower abdomen and the urinary urgency you are experiencing. These symptoms can be quite distressing, and it’s important to understand their potential causes and implications.
The sensation of tightness in the lower abdomen, along with urinary urgency, can be indicative of several underlying issues. One common cause could be related to bladder irritation or inflammation, which may lead to a condition known as urinary urgency. This is characterized by a sudden, strong need to urinate, often accompanied by discomfort or pain. In your case, the fact that you feel the urge to urinate shortly after having just done so, but find that you cannot, suggests that your bladder may be reacting to some form of irritation.
There are several potential causes for these symptoms:
1. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): UTIs are a common cause of urinary urgency and can also lead to discomfort in the lower abdomen. Symptoms may include a burning sensation during urination, frequent urination, and lower abdominal pain. If you suspect a UTI, it is advisable to get a urinalysis done to confirm the diagnosis.
2. Bladder Overactivity: This condition, also known as overactive bladder (OAB), can cause a frequent and urgent need to urinate. It may occur without an infection and can be triggered by various factors, including stress, certain medications, or even lifestyle factors.
3. Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: The pelvic floor muscles support the bladder and other organs in the pelvis. If these muscles are tense or dysfunctional, they can lead to sensations of tightness and urinary urgency. This can sometimes occur after activities that engage these muscles, such as sexual activity or exercise.
4. Gastrointestinal Issues: Sometimes, gastrointestinal problems such as constipation or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can manifest as lower abdominal discomfort and may also affect urinary patterns due to the close proximity of the bladder and intestines.
5. Anxiety or Stress: Psychological factors can also contribute to urinary urgency and abdominal tightness. Stress and anxiety can lead to increased muscle tension and may exacerbate sensations of urgency.
Regarding your concern about whether your recent sexual activity could be related to these symptoms, it is possible that the physical engagement may have temporarily affected your pelvic floor muscles or bladder function. However, if you practiced good hygiene, as you mentioned washing your hands before, it is less likely to be a direct cause of an infection.
Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend tests such as a urinalysis, ultrasound, or even a referral to a urologist or gastroenterologist, depending on the findings. It’s essential to address these symptoms promptly, especially if they persist or worsen, as they can significantly impact your quality of life.
In the meantime, consider keeping a symptom diary to track when the urgency occurs, any associated activities, and any other symptoms you may experience. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in determining the underlying cause and appropriate treatment.
Take care, and I hope you find relief from your symptoms soon!
