Axillary pain and chest tightness?

Hello Doctor, as mentioned in the subject, ever since I had a massage under my armpit a while ago, my armpit has become very sensitive.
It doesn't exactly hurt, but it feels like there is something soft under my armpit; it’s not hard, but it does hurt when pressed firmly.
After my menstrual period starts, it subsides.
Previously, I would only experience swelling and pain in my breasts and armpits close to my menstrual period, but after the massage, it has been two months now where my breasts and armpits start to swell and hurt on ovulation day.
In the first month, I visited a breast surgeon, and the doctor performed an ultrasound, which showed no issues.
However, it has started again in the second month...
what could be going on?

Since you have already undergone an examination in the breast surgery department, the swelling and pain in your breasts and armpits are likely still related to your menstrual cycle.

Understanding armpit pain and breast discomfort can be quite complex, as there are various factors that can contribute to these sensations. Based on your description, it seems that the discomfort in your armpit and breast area may be related to hormonal changes, particularly in relation to your menstrual cycle, as well as potential muscle tension or irritation from the massage you received.

Causes of Armpit Pain and Breast Discomfort
1. Hormonal Fluctuations: Many women experience breast tenderness and discomfort in the days leading up to their menstrual period due to hormonal changes, particularly fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone. This can cause swelling and sensitivity in breast tissue, which may also extend to the surrounding areas, including the armpits. The fact that you notice a pattern with your menstrual cycle suggests that hormonal changes could be a significant factor in your discomfort.

2. Muscle Strain or Irritation: The massage you received may have caused some irritation or strain in the muscles around your armpit. The pectoral muscles, which are located in the chest, can sometimes refer pain to the armpit area. If the massage was deep or vigorous, it could have led to muscle soreness or tension, which might explain the "soft" sensation you feel in your armpit.

3. Lymphatic System Response: The armpit area contains lymph nodes that can become reactive due to various factors, including hormonal changes, infections, or even physical manipulation (like massage). If there is any swelling or tenderness in the lymph nodes, it could lead to discomfort in the armpit.

4. Fibrocystic Changes: Many women experience fibrocystic breast changes, which can cause lumpiness, tenderness, and discomfort in the breast tissue. These changes are often influenced by hormonal fluctuations and can lead to sensations of fullness or pain in both the breasts and the surrounding areas, including the armpits.

5. Other Medical Conditions: While less common, other conditions such as infections, cysts, or even benign tumors can cause discomfort in the breast and armpit area. However, since your ultrasound showed no abnormalities, this is less likely to be the case.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a detailed diary of your symptoms, noting when they occur in relation to your menstrual cycle. This can help you and your healthcare provider identify patterns and potential triggers.

2. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relief medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help alleviate discomfort when it occurs. However, consult with your doctor before starting any medication.

3. Gentle Stretching and Exercise: Incorporating gentle stretching and strengthening exercises for the chest and shoulder muscles may help alleviate tension and discomfort. Yoga or physical therapy could be beneficial.

4. Avoiding Triggers: If you suspect that the massage may have contributed to your discomfort, consider avoiding deep tissue massages in the armpit and chest area until you have a better understanding of your symptoms.

5. Follow-Up with Healthcare Provider: Since you have already consulted with a breast specialist and had an ultrasound, it may be beneficial to follow up with them if your symptoms persist or worsen. They may recommend further evaluation or different management strategies.

6. Lifestyle Adjustments: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management techniques, can help regulate hormonal fluctuations and improve overall well-being.

In conclusion, while the discomfort you are experiencing may be linked to hormonal changes and possibly muscle irritation from the massage, it is essential to continue monitoring your symptoms and maintain open communication with your healthcare provider. They can provide tailored advice and treatment options based on your specific situation.
