The stomach keeps growling continuously?

Hello Doctor: On November 22, I went to a large hospital for an examination due to persistent stomach noises accompanied by bloating.
Initially, the doctor suggested it might be indigestion and ordered a stool test.
After a week, the follow-up report showed normal results, but my symptoms did not improve.
The doctor prescribed a month’s worth of medication for me to take.
About a week ago, I felt that I was better, and my stomach was no longer making noises, so I relaxed my dietary restrictions.
However, that night, my stomach symptoms returned.
The symptoms include: 1.
My stomach starts making noises about 1.2 hours after eating, and it also makes noises in the evening and morning.
2.
My bowel movements are sometimes loose and sometimes thin and stringy (with some undigested food).
3.
After my stomach makes noises, I tend to pass gas frequently.
4.
Sometimes, there is no sound, but I can feel my intestines constantly moving; however, I am currently not experiencing bloating or abdominal pain.
I would like to ask the doctor if I should seek further examination at another hospital.
Also, I have been staying up very late recently due to some issues; could this be affecting my condition? Thank you for your guidance.

More Info

Persistent stomach noises, often accompanied by symptoms like bloating, gas, and changes in bowel habits, can be quite distressing. Your experience of having these noises and related symptoms, despite normal test results, raises several important considerations regarding gastrointestinal health and when to seek further medical help.

Understanding the Symptoms
1. Stomach Noises (Borborygmi): These sounds are typically caused by the movement of gas and fluid in the intestines. While they can be normal, persistent or loud noises may indicate underlying issues such as digestive disorders, food intolerances, or gastrointestinal motility problems.

2. Bloating and Gas: These symptoms often accompany digestive issues. They can be exacerbated by certain foods, eating habits, or stress. Foods that are high in fiber, dairy products (if lactose intolerant), and carbonated beverages can contribute to gas production.

3. Bowel Movements: The variability in your stool consistency, from loose to thin, can indicate changes in your digestive process. The presence of undigested food may suggest that your body is not fully breaking down what you eat, which can be due to enzyme deficiencies or rapid transit through the intestines.

Potential Causes
- Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders: Conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can cause symptoms like yours, including bloating, gas, and irregular bowel habits without any identifiable structural abnormalities.

- Food Intolerances: Lactose intolerance or gluten sensitivity can lead to similar symptoms. Keeping a food diary may help identify any correlations between what you eat and your symptoms.

- Stress and Sleep: You mentioned experiencing stress and irregular sleep patterns. Both can significantly impact gastrointestinal function. Stress can alter gut motility and increase sensitivity, leading to more pronounced symptoms.

When to Seek Further Medical Help
Given that your initial tests returned normal results, it may be beneficial to consider the following:
1. Persistent Symptoms: If your symptoms continue despite treatment, or if they worsen, it’s advisable to seek further evaluation. This could include a referral to a gastroenterologist for more specialized testing, such as an upper endoscopy or colonoscopy, especially if you have a family history of gastrointestinal diseases.

2. New Symptoms: If you develop additional symptoms such as significant weight loss, severe abdominal pain, blood in your stool, or persistent vomiting, you should seek immediate medical attention.

3. Dietary Review: Consider consulting with a dietitian who can help you identify potential food intolerances and create a tailored eating plan that may alleviate your symptoms.

4. Mental Health Support: If stress and anxiety are contributing to your symptoms, consider speaking with a mental health professional. Techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or mindfulness can be effective in managing stress-related gastrointestinal symptoms.

Conclusion
In summary, while your symptoms may not currently indicate a serious underlying condition, their persistence warrants further investigation, especially if they impact your quality of life. Keeping a detailed record of your symptoms, dietary habits, and stress levels can provide valuable information for your healthcare provider. If your symptoms do not improve with the current treatment or if new symptoms arise, do not hesitate to seek further medical evaluation. Your health is paramount, and addressing both physical and psychological aspects is crucial for effective management.
