Emergency contraceptive pill

Hello doctor, my menstruation started on December 17, 2018.
I began taking Yaz (Yaz birth control pills), and now it is January 3, 2019.
I'm not sure if it's due to the birth control pills or something else, but I still have brownish discharge with blood, similar to the end of my period.
Typically, this would resolve in about 10 days and return to clear, white discharge.
However, today is the 18th day, and the situation has not improved.
I wonder if this is caused by the birth control pills.

Dr. Chen Liqin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Due to the lower dosage of Yuzhi, there is a possibility of abnormal bleeding.
Please consult with a physician at the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinic for further discussion about the medication.

When starting a new birth control pill, such as the one you mentioned (悦姿錠), it is not uncommon to experience some changes in your menstrual cycle, including brown discharge. This brown discharge is often old blood that is being expelled from the body and can occur for several reasons, particularly when beginning hormonal contraceptives.

Firstly, it's important to understand that birth control pills work by altering your hormonal levels to prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and thin the uterine lining. These changes can lead to irregular bleeding or spotting, especially during the first few months of use as your body adjusts to the new hormone levels. The brown discharge you are experiencing could be a result of this adjustment period.

Typically, when you start taking birth control pills, your body may not immediately adapt to the hormonal changes, leading to breakthrough bleeding or spotting. This is especially common in the first three months of starting the pill. The brown color of the discharge indicates that it is older blood, which is not unusual and is generally not a cause for concern.

However, if the brown discharge persists beyond the initial adjustment period (which is usually around three months), or if you experience other symptoms such as heavy bleeding, severe pain, or any unusual changes, it would be advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They can assess whether the birth control method is suitable for you or if an alternative might be necessary.

In addition, if you have recently started the pill and are experiencing brown discharge, it could also be related to other factors such as stress, changes in weight, or other medications you may be taking. Lifestyle factors can also influence your menstrual cycle, so it’s essential to consider these aspects as well.

If you are concerned about the duration and nature of the discharge, it is always best to reach out to your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status. They may also perform a physical examination or run tests if necessary to rule out any underlying conditions.

In summary, while brown discharge after starting birth control pills can be a normal side effect as your body adjusts to the hormones, it is essential to monitor the situation. If it continues beyond a few months or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Remember, your health and peace of mind are paramount, and your healthcare provider is there to help you navigate these changes.
