Bleeding during sexual intercourse?

Hello Doctor, over the past three months, I have experienced pink blood during sexual intercourse, and sometimes there is bleeding from the vagina when I have a bowel movement, with a considerable amount of blood.
I have seen several doctors; the Pap smear results were normal but showed inflammation.
An ultrasound indicated that the size of the ovaries and uterus is normal, but there is some cervical erosion.
Another doctor mentioned that I have a right ovarian cyst.
The doctor suggested that it is functional bleeding and prescribed me medication to regulate my menstrual cycle, but I feel that my menstrual periods are quite normal.
I am a bit confused and unsure about which direction to take for treatment.
I would appreciate your clarification.
Thank you.

More Info

Understanding pink discharge and bleeding during intercourse can be quite concerning, especially when it occurs frequently and in varying amounts. Based on your description, it seems that you have already consulted multiple healthcare professionals, which is a good step in addressing your symptoms. Let's break down the potential causes and solutions for your situation.

Causes of Pink Discharge and Bleeding
1. Hormonal Imbalance: Hormonal fluctuations can lead to irregular bleeding or spotting between periods. This can be influenced by various factors, including stress, weight changes, and hormonal medications. Since you mentioned taking medication for regulating your cycle, it’s possible that your body is still adjusting to these changes.

2. Cervical Issues: You noted that you have cervical inflammation and a diagnosis of cervical ectropion (also known as cervical erosion). This condition occurs when the cells from the inside of the cervical canal grow on the outside of the cervix, which can lead to increased sensitivity and bleeding, especially during intercourse or after a bowel movement.

3. Ovarian Conditions: The mention of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) could also be a contributing factor. PCOS can lead to irregular menstrual cycles and hormonal imbalances, which may manifest as abnormal bleeding or discharge.

4. Infections: Infections of the reproductive tract, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or bacterial vaginosis, can also cause abnormal discharge and bleeding. Given that you have inflammation, it might be worth investigating further for any underlying infections.

5. Functional Uterine Bleeding: This term refers to abnormal bleeding that is not due to any identifiable pathology. It can be related to hormonal imbalances and may require treatment with hormonal therapies.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Follow-Up with a Specialist: Since you have already seen several doctors, it might be beneficial to consult with a gynecologist who specializes in reproductive endocrinology. They can provide a more comprehensive evaluation of your hormonal status and any underlying conditions.

2. Further Testing: If not already done, consider requesting additional tests such as hormone level assessments (like estrogen, progesterone, and thyroid hormones) and possibly a hysteroscopy to examine the uterine lining directly.

3. Medication Review: Discuss the medications you are currently taking with your healthcare provider. Sometimes, adjusting the dosage or changing the type of hormonal therapy can help regulate your cycle and reduce abnormal bleeding.

4. Lifestyle Modifications: Stress management techniques, maintaining a healthy weight, and regular exercise can help balance hormones and improve overall reproductive health.

5. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep a detailed diary of your symptoms, including the timing, amount, and nature of any discharge or bleeding. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in diagnosing and treating your condition.

6. Consider Birth Control Options: If you are not planning to conceive, hormonal birth control methods can help regulate your menstrual cycle and reduce the occurrence of abnormal bleeding.

Conclusion
In summary, while pink discharge and bleeding can be alarming, understanding the underlying causes is crucial for effective management. Given your symptoms and previous evaluations, it is essential to continue working closely with your healthcare providers to find a tailored approach that addresses your specific needs. Don't hesitate to seek a second opinion or ask for further testing if you feel your concerns are not being adequately addressed. Your health and comfort are paramount, and there are solutions available to help you manage these symptoms effectively.
