Non-displaced fracture of the distal clavicle?

Hello Dr.
Lee, I had a car accident last week on December 30th that resulted in a distal clavicle fracture.
Currently, I am undergoing conservative treatment with a figure-eight shoulder strap.
I would like to ask you how long it typically takes for healing or bone formation to begin.
The outpatient physician I consulted mentioned that surgery may or may not be necessary, and that the fracture is not significant.
What is the likelihood of self-healing in my case?

Qiu Xiansheng, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/01/06

Dr. Li Yongheng reply Orthopedics

Hello Mr.
Chiu, a distal clavicle fracture typically requires approximately 6 weeks of immobilization with a figure-of-eight shoulder strap.
Bone healing generally begins around 3 weeks, and complete healing takes about 12 weeks.
The likelihood of spontaneous healing is close to 100%.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Non-displaced distal clavicle fractures are relatively common injuries, particularly in the context of sports or accidents like car crashes. The treatment and healing time for such fractures can vary based on several factors, including the specific nature of the fracture, the patient's overall health, and adherence to treatment protocols.

In your case, since you are currently undergoing conservative treatment with a figure-of-eight bandage, this is a common approach for non-displaced fractures. The primary goal of this treatment is to immobilize the shoulder and allow the bone to heal naturally without surgical intervention. The healing time for non-displaced distal clavicle fractures typically ranges from 6 to 12 weeks. Most patients begin to notice a significant reduction in pain and improvement in function within the first few weeks, but complete healing may take longer.

The likelihood of successful healing without surgery is generally high for non-displaced fractures. Studies suggest that the majority of non-displaced distal clavicle fractures heal well with conservative management. Factors that can influence healing include age, activity level, and any underlying health conditions that may affect bone healing, such as osteoporosis or smoking.

During the healing process, it is crucial to follow your doctor's recommendations regarding activity levels and rehabilitation. While the figure-of-eight bandage helps stabilize the clavicle, gentle range-of-motion exercises may be introduced as healing progresses to prevent stiffness in the shoulder joint. However, it is essential to avoid any activities that could stress the fracture site until your doctor gives you the green light.

If you experience persistent pain, swelling, or any signs of complications such as increased deformity or loss of function, it is vital to consult your healthcare provider promptly. They may recommend imaging studies, such as X-rays, to assess the healing process and determine if any further intervention is necessary.

In summary, with proper conservative treatment, the chances of your non-displaced distal clavicle fracture healing without surgery are quite favorable. Expect a healing period of approximately 6 to 12 weeks, with gradual improvement in pain and function. Always keep an open line of communication with your healthcare provider to ensure that your recovery is on track and to address any concerns you may have during the healing process.

Hello, Doctor: I asked about my clavicle fracture from a car accident yesterday, but since it has been six months and the doctor said the fracture is still 0.4 cm and has not healed, I would like to know if there are other treatment options available. Thank you.

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics
If there is no displacement, continued observation may be sufficient, as it is likely to heal on its own without the need for any specific treatment methods.
