Throat issues
I would like to ask the doctor about having phlegm stuck in my throat for over four months.
I'm not sure what the cause is.
Before the phlegm issue, I did swallow a fish bone, but I'm not sure if that is the cause, so I didn't see a doctor.
Later, I was diagnosed with sinusitis and saw a doctor, but the symptoms still haven't resolved.
I would like to know which specialist I should see for further examination.

Hello: Commonly, this is chronic pharyngitis.
It is recommended to first visit an otolaryngologist and a gastroenterologist.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Persistent throat mucus can be a frustrating and uncomfortable condition, and it’s understandable that you’re seeking clarity on when to consult an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist. Given your symptoms of mucus accumulation in the throat for over four months, along with a history of possible fish bone ingestion and previous sinusitis, it’s important to consider several factors before deciding on the appropriate course of action.
First, let’s discuss the potential causes of persistent throat mucus. Mucus production is a normal bodily function, serving to keep the throat and nasal passages moist and to trap pathogens and debris. However, excessive mucus can be indicative of underlying issues. Common causes include:
1. Post-Nasal Drip: This occurs when excess mucus from the nasal passages drips down the back of the throat, often leading to a sensation of mucus accumulation. This can be caused by allergies, sinus infections, or irritants in the environment.
2. Chronic Sinusitis: Given your history of sinusitis, it’s possible that inflammation in the sinuses is contributing to your symptoms. Chronic sinusitis can lead to ongoing mucus production and discomfort.
3. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can irritate the throat and lead to increased mucus production as a protective response.
4. Infections: Bacterial or viral infections can cause increased mucus production. If you’ve had a recent upper respiratory infection, this could be a contributing factor.
5. Foreign Body: The ingestion of a fish bone could potentially cause irritation or injury to the throat, leading to inflammation and mucus production. If the bone is still lodged or if there was any damage caused, this could be a significant factor.
Given that your symptoms have persisted for over four months, it is advisable to see an ENT specialist. An ENT doctor can perform a thorough examination of your throat, nasal passages, and sinuses. They may use tools such as a flexible endoscope to visualize the throat and nasal cavities, which can help identify any obstructions, inflammation, or signs of infection.
In addition to a physical examination, the ENT specialist may recommend imaging studies, such as a CT scan of the sinuses, to assess for chronic sinusitis or other structural issues. They may also conduct allergy testing if they suspect that allergies are contributing to your symptoms.
It’s important to address this condition promptly, as persistent mucus can lead to further complications, such as chronic cough, throat irritation, or even secondary infections. The ENT specialist will be able to provide a tailored treatment plan based on the underlying cause of your symptoms, which may include medications such as antihistamines, nasal corticosteroids, or antibiotics if an infection is present.
In summary, if you have been experiencing persistent throat mucus for four months, especially following a history of sinusitis and potential foreign body ingestion, it is highly recommended that you consult an ENT specialist. They will be able to provide a comprehensive evaluation and appropriate management to help alleviate your symptoms and address any underlying issues.
