Can I get pregnant?

Hello, I had unprotected intercourse on November 24, with ejaculation outside.
My last menstrual period started on October 29, and I had a normal flow on December 6.
However, my period was expected on the 13th of this month, and it still hasn't arrived.
I've taken two home pregnancy tests in the afternoon, both showing a single line.
I usually have irregular menstrual cycles and have been seeing a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.
Is there a chance I could be pregnant?

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/01/23

Thank you for your question! During pregnancy, a urine pregnancy test can typically detect pregnancy 5-7 days after the missed menstrual period.
If the test does not show a positive result, the likelihood of pregnancy is low.
However, for patients with irregular menstrual cycles, it can be challenging to determine if conception has occurred.
The Chiayi Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare cares about you!

When considering the possibility of pregnancy, especially in the context of irregular menstrual cycles, several factors come into play. Based on your description, you had unprotected intercourse on November 24, and your last menstrual period (LMP) started on October 29. You mentioned that you experienced a normal menstrual flow on December 6, but now, you are overdue for your expected period, which typically would have been around December 13.

Firstly, it’s important to note that irregular menstrual cycles can complicate the understanding of your fertility window. Irregular periods can be caused by various factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, changes in weight, or underlying health conditions. Since you have a history of irregular cycles and are receiving treatment from a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, these factors could also influence your menstrual regularity.

The fact that you had a normal period on December 6 is a positive sign, as it indicates that your body was functioning normally at that time. However, since your period is now late, it raises the question of whether you could be pregnant. The timing of your ovulation is crucial here. If you have irregular cycles, pinpointing ovulation can be challenging. Typically, ovulation occurs about 14 days before the start of your next period, but this can vary significantly with irregular cycles.

Regarding the pregnancy tests you conducted, it’s essential to consider the timing of the tests. Home pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period, and they work by detecting the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your urine. If you tested in the afternoon, it’s possible that your urine was diluted, which could lead to a false negative result. For the most accurate results, it is recommended to test with the first morning urine, as it contains the highest concentration of hCG.

Given that you have had two negative tests, the likelihood of pregnancy decreases, but it is not entirely ruled out, especially considering your irregular cycles. If your period does not arrive soon, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare provider. They may recommend a blood test, which can detect pregnancy earlier and more accurately than home urine tests.

In summary, while the chances of being pregnant are lower due to the negative tests and the normal period you had in December, the irregularity of your cycles means that it’s still a possibility. If your period continues to be delayed, or if you experience any unusual symptoms (such as nausea, breast tenderness, or fatigue), it’s advisable to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can offer further evaluation and guidance tailored to your specific situation, ensuring that any underlying issues contributing to your irregular cycles are addressed.
