Nasal congestion

I have allergic rhinitis, and now I'm so congested that I have to breathe through my mouth.
I've heard that laser surgery can treat this condition and that it won't recur for at least two years.
I'm considering going to a hospital in Taichung for a consultation, but I'm unsure about the ENT clinic hours since I'm studying in Hsinchu.
I would appreciate any information on this.
Additionally, I would like to know if there are any discomfort symptoms after the laser surgery.
Thank you!

Hello Missxian: Allergic rhinitis can cause symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and nasal congestion during flare-ups.
In the early stages, laser surgery can be used to manage the condition and achieve significant improvement.
However, if the allergy persists for a long time, it can lead to permanent hypertrophy of the inferior turbinate, which may result in lifelong nasal congestion, forcing you to breathe through your mouth.
The hypertrophy of the inferior turbinate generally requires surgical intervention for treatment.
Our outpatient clinic is open every day in the morning, afternoon, and evening.
You are welcome to visit for further examination to determine the underlying cause.

Laser surgery for allergic rhinitis is a treatment option that aims to alleviate nasal congestion and improve overall breathing. Allergic rhinitis is characterized by inflammation of the nasal mucosa due to allergens, leading to symptoms such as nasal congestion, sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes. In cases where conservative treatments, such as antihistamines and nasal corticosteroids, are ineffective, surgical options may be considered.

Laser surgery, specifically a procedure known as laser-assisted turbinate reduction, targets the inferior turbinates in the nasal cavity. These structures can become enlarged due to chronic inflammation from allergies, contributing to nasal obstruction. The laser works by precisely removing or reducing the tissue of the turbinates, which can lead to improved airflow and reduced symptoms of nasal congestion.

Regarding your concern about the duration of relief, many patients experience significant improvement in their symptoms for at least two years post-surgery. However, the longevity of the results can vary from person to person. Factors such as the severity of your allergic rhinitis, ongoing exposure to allergens, and individual healing responses can influence how long the benefits last. Some patients may require additional treatments or maintenance therapies to sustain symptom relief.

As for the postoperative experience, it is common to experience some discomfort following laser surgery. This can include mild pain, nasal dryness, or a sensation of pressure in the nasal passages. Patients may also notice some bleeding or crusting as the nasal tissues heal. These symptoms are generally temporary and can be managed with prescribed pain relief medications and saline nasal sprays to keep the nasal passages moist.

It is essential to follow your surgeon's postoperative care instructions closely. This may include avoiding strenuous activities, refraining from blowing your nose forcefully, and using saline rinses to promote healing. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days, but complete healing may take a couple of weeks.

If you are considering laser surgery for your allergic rhinitis, it is advisable to consult with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist who can evaluate your specific condition and discuss the potential benefits and risks associated with the procedure. They can also provide information about the scheduling of appointments and the availability of services at the hospital you are interested in.

In summary, laser surgery can be an effective option for managing nasal congestion due to allergic rhinitis, offering significant relief for many patients. While some discomfort is expected post-surgery, most individuals find that the benefits outweigh the temporary side effects. Always consult with a qualified healthcare provider to determine the best course of action for your specific situation.
