Seeing Four Thumbs During Vision Test: Is It Normal? - Ophthalmology

During the "dominant eye" test, I saw four thumbs?

Hello, a few days ago during a "dominant eye" test where I made a triangle with my hands, I saw four thumbs.
The thumbs on the left and right were horizontally aligned and positioned to cover each eye.
When I looked directly at the thumbs, everything appeared normal.
I visited an ophthalmology clinic, and the doctor said that the spacing between my eyes was normal.
I recall that I did not have any issues during this test in the past.
After returning home, I asked my family to try it, and they only saw two thumbs.

1.
Is seeing four thumbs really normal? (The doctor might want to try it as well.)
2.
A month ago, I took a five-day ovulation medication prescribed by my gynecologist, which contains Clomiphene.
I found that the side effects mentioned possible visual disturbances; could this be related?

Seeing four thumbs during a vision test can be a perplexing experience, and it raises important questions about visual perception and potential underlying issues. Based on your description, it seems that you were performing a test to determine your dominant eye, and instead of seeing the expected two thumbs, you perceived four. This phenomenon can be attributed to several factors, including binocular vision, eye alignment, and possibly the effects of medication.

Firstly, the perception of four thumbs instead of two could be related to how your brain processes visual information from both eyes. Normally, our brain combines the images from each eye to create a single, cohesive view of the world. However, if there is a misalignment or disparity in the images received from each eye, it can lead to double vision or even the perception of multiple images. This is particularly relevant if you have any underlying conditions such as strabismus (crossed eyes) or other binocular vision disorders. The fact that your eye doctor indicated that the spacing between your eyes is normal suggests that there may not be a significant anatomical issue, but it is still worth exploring further.

Regarding the medication you mentioned, Clomiphene citrate (commonly known as Clomid) is primarily used for inducing ovulation in women. While it is not commonly associated with visual disturbances, some patients have reported experiencing side effects that include visual changes. These can range from blurred vision to more complex visual phenomena. If you recently started this medication and began noticing visual changes, it is advisable to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They may consider adjusting your dosage or exploring alternative treatments if they suspect the medication is contributing to your visual symptoms.

In terms of whether seeing four thumbs is "normal," it is essential to consider the context of the test and your overall visual health. If this is a new occurrence and you have not experienced it before, it warrants further investigation. You might want to schedule a comprehensive eye examination that includes tests for binocular vision, eye alignment, and possibly even a visual field test. These assessments can help determine if there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

Additionally, it is beneficial to perform regular eye exercises and ensure that you are taking breaks during activities that require prolonged focus, such as reading or using screens. This can help reduce eye strain and improve overall visual comfort.

In summary, while seeing four thumbs during a vision test is not typical, it can be influenced by various factors, including binocular vision issues and potential side effects from medication. It is crucial to follow up with your eye care professional for a thorough evaluation to rule out any significant concerns and to ensure that your visual health is maintained. Regular monitoring and open communication with your healthcare providers will help you navigate any changes in your vision effectively.
