Dark brown menstrual blood?
I underwent an abortion in June, and my menstrual cycles have been normal since then.
However, in the past few months (December, January, February), my menstrual cycle has been regular, but the flow has only been brown, very dark, or spotty.
Only the day before my period starts, there is some red discharge, but what ends up on the pad is all dark brown! In November, I had a Pap smear that showed inflammation, but the human papillomavirus (HPV) test was normal.

More Info
Understanding dark brown menstrual blood can be concerning for many women, especially after experiencing a medical procedure such as an abortion. It is important to recognize that menstrual blood can vary in color and consistency due to several factors, including hormonal changes, the health of the reproductive system, and the presence of any underlying conditions.
Firstly, menstrual blood is typically bright red when it is fresh and flowing, but it can appear darker, such as brown or even black, when it has been in the uterus for a longer period of time before being expelled. This is because the blood oxidizes, which changes its color. Dark brown blood is often seen at the beginning or end of a menstrual period, where the flow is lighter, and the blood has had more time to oxidize. Therefore, if you are experiencing dark brown blood throughout your menstrual cycle, it may be indicative of a slower flow or a longer retention time in the uterus.
After an abortion, it is not uncommon for menstrual cycles to take some time to regulate. Hormonal fluctuations can lead to changes in the menstrual cycle, including variations in blood color and flow. If your cycles have been regular but the blood is consistently dark brown, it may be worth considering other factors that could be influencing this change.
In your case, you mentioned that you had a Pap smear in November which indicated inflammation, but the HPV test came back normal. Inflammation can sometimes affect menstrual blood characteristics. Conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, or pelvic inflammatory disease can also lead to changes in menstrual blood color and consistency. If you have any accompanying symptoms such as pain, unusual discharge, or significant changes in your cycle, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
It is also essential to consider lifestyle factors that can influence menstrual health. Stress, diet, exercise, and overall health can all play significant roles in menstrual cycle regularity and characteristics. For instance, high levels of stress can lead to hormonal imbalances, which may affect your menstrual cycle. Similarly, significant changes in diet or exercise routines can also impact menstrual flow and color.
If you are concerned about the dark brown color of your menstrual blood, especially if it is a new development or accompanied by other symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or additional blood tests to rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, while dark brown menstrual blood can be normal, especially if it occurs at the beginning or end of your period, consistent dark brown blood throughout your cycle warrants further investigation. Given your recent history of an abortion and the inflammation noted in your Pap smear, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and consult with a healthcare professional to ensure that there are no underlying issues that need to be addressed. Regular check-ups and open communication with your healthcare provider can help maintain your reproductive health and address any concerns you may have.
