Abnormal bleeding
Hello, doctor.
My last menstrual period was from January 16 to January 22.
I had sexual intercourse on February 10, but it was only external friction.
After the intercourse, I experienced a stinging sensation when I went to the bathroom, and the next day I noticed some bleeding (brown in color, light amount, no abdominal pain).
I found that normal ovulation bleeding should last 1-3 days, but it has been 5 days and the bleeding is still ongoing.
I'm unsure if the friction caused vaginal injury leading to the bleeding or if there is another reason.
I would appreciate your clarification.
Thank you.

Abnormal vaginal bleeding can be a source of concern for many women, and understanding its causes is essential for addressing any underlying issues. Based on your description, you experienced a series of events that led to the current situation of prolonged bleeding following a sexual encounter. Let's break down the potential causes and considerations regarding your symptoms.
Firstly, it's important to note that the timing of your last menstrual period (January 16-22) and the sexual activity on February 10 may be relevant. Since your bleeding began after this encounter, it raises the question of whether the bleeding is related to the sexual activity itself. In some cases, friction during sexual activity can cause minor trauma to the vaginal walls, leading to light bleeding. This is particularly plausible if the activity involved vigorous movements or if there was insufficient lubrication. The coffee-colored blood you mentioned typically indicates older blood, which can be a sign of minor trauma rather than fresh bleeding from a more serious condition.
However, the fact that the bleeding has persisted for five days is noteworthy. While light spotting can occur after sexual activity, it usually resolves within a day or two. If the bleeding continues beyond that, it may warrant further investigation. Other potential causes of abnormal vaginal bleeding include hormonal imbalances, infections, or conditions such as cervical polyps or fibroids. Hormonal fluctuations, especially around ovulation or menstruation, can lead to unexpected bleeding, which might explain your situation if you are experiencing an irregular cycle.
Given that you did not report any significant pain or discomfort, this is a positive sign, as severe pain could indicate a more serious issue, such as an ectopic pregnancy or a miscarriage. However, it is still essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the bleeding continues, increases in volume, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, chills, or significant pain, you should seek medical attention promptly.
In your case, since you have already experienced a sexual encounter and are noticing unusual bleeding, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. This may include a pelvic examination, ultrasound, or other diagnostic tests to rule out any underlying conditions. Additionally, being open about your sexual history with your healthcare provider is crucial, as it can help them make a more accurate diagnosis.
In summary, while the bleeding you are experiencing could be a result of minor trauma from sexual activity, the persistence of the bleeding beyond a couple of days suggests that further evaluation is necessary. Hormonal imbalances, infections, or other gynecological issues could also be contributing factors. It is always best to err on the side of caution and consult a healthcare professional to ensure that any potential issues are addressed appropriately. Remember, your health is paramount, and understanding your body is key to maintaining it.
