Intermenstrual discharge

Hello Doctor, I had my menstrual period from February 4 to February 10.
After having intercourse with my husband on the 11th, there was a small blood stain on the mattress.
Later, I noticed light pink blood that turned brown and lasted for two days.
On February 14 and 15, everything was normal, but on the morning of February 16, when I strained to have a bowel movement, I expelled some white discharge along with brown discharge.
Could this be related to ovulation? I had a normal Pap smear this year, but there is a polyp in my uterus that is nearly two centimeters.
Two years ago, I underwent a hysteroscopy, and the doctor said it was nothing to worry about and advised me to continue monitoring it.
I have also been having regular ultrasounds for the past few years.
Should I seek medical attention to check if the bleeding is related to the polyp? Thank you.

Hello, I apologize for not being able to provide a diagnosis based on what you've described.
It could be ovulatory bleeding; monitoring the situation should suffice.
If you continue to experience discomfort, I recommend seeing a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

Abnormal discharge, especially when accompanied by changes in color or consistency, can be concerning and warrants careful consideration. In your case, the timeline of events you described, including the menstrual cycle, sexual activity, and subsequent discharge, raises several points for discussion.

Firstly, the presence of light pink blood or brown discharge after sexual intercourse can sometimes be attributed to several benign causes, including ovulation spotting, which occurs around the time of ovulation when the ovary releases an egg. This can lead to slight bleeding due to the hormonal changes and the rupture of the follicle. However, given that you have a history of uterine polyps, it is essential to consider that these growths can also cause irregular bleeding or spotting.

The fact that you experienced a small amount of blood after intercourse and then a continuation of brown discharge could indicate a few possibilities:
1. Ovulation Spotting: As mentioned, this is a common occurrence for some women and typically does not indicate a serious issue. It is often light and short-lived.

2. Uterine Polyps: Since you have a known uterine polyp, it is crucial to monitor any changes in your bleeding patterns. Polyps can sometimes cause irregular bleeding, especially after sexual activity. While your doctor previously indicated that the polyp did not require immediate intervention, any new or unusual bleeding should be evaluated.

3. Hormonal Fluctuations: Hormonal changes throughout your menstrual cycle can lead to variations in discharge and bleeding. If you are nearing ovulation or have recently ovulated, these fluctuations can cause light spotting.

4. Infection or Other Conditions: While less likely given your description, infections or other conditions affecting the reproductive system can also lead to abnormal discharge. Symptoms such as itching, burning, or a strong odor accompanying the discharge would warrant further investigation.

Given your history of a uterine polyp and the recent changes in your discharge, it is advisable to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or possibly a hysteroscopy to assess the polyp and any other potential issues. It is essential to rule out any complications related to the polyp or other underlying conditions.

In summary, while some causes of abnormal discharge can be benign, your specific situation, particularly with the known uterine polyp, suggests that a medical evaluation is prudent. Monitoring your symptoms and seeking timely medical advice can help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly, providing peace of mind and maintaining your reproductive health.
