Post-laser care methods and precautions?

Dear Chief Physician,
Three months ago, I discovered a retinal tear in the upper right quadrant of my right eye during a health check-up and urgently underwent laser surgery at National Taiwan University Hospital.
Currently, the black shadows and flashes in my vision have gradually diminished.
Here are my questions:
1.
When transitioning from bright to dark environments, I experience temporary visual obstructions in my right eye.
Is this a post-operative side effect of the laser treatment? Will it gradually resolve?
2.
After wearing glasses for my right eye, I can see clearly, but I notice that the transmission of visual information to my brain is delayed, or I am unable to automatically store impressions in my brain as I used to.
Is this also a side effect?
3.
Am I able to travel abroad and take a long-haul flight next month?
4.
What are the recommended post-laser care methods and other precautions I should be aware of?
Thank you.

Post-Laser Eye Surgery Care: Essential Tips and Considerations
Hello! It’s great to hear that you are recovering from your laser eye surgery. Your questions reflect common concerns among patients who have undergone similar procedures. Let’s address each of your queries in detail.

1. Temporary Visual Disturbances: The phenomenon you are experiencing, where you see a temporary obstruction or shadow when transitioning from bright to dark environments, can be a result of the laser surgery. This is often due to changes in the way your eye processes light after the procedure. Such visual disturbances can occur as your eye heals and adjusts to the changes made during surgery. In many cases, these symptoms gradually diminish over time, but it’s essential to monitor them. If they persist or worsen, you should consult your ophthalmologist for a thorough evaluation.

2. Delayed Visual Processing: The sensation of delayed visual processing or difficulty in forming visual memories can also be linked to the adjustments your brain is making post-surgery. After laser surgery, your brain needs time to recalibrate its visual processing, especially if there were significant changes in your vision. This can be particularly noticeable if you had a pre-existing condition affecting your vision. While this is often temporary, if you continue to experience these symptoms, it would be wise to discuss them with your eye care provider. They can assess whether this is part of the normal healing process or if further intervention is needed.

3. Traveling After Surgery: As for traveling, especially on long-haul flights, it is generally advisable to wait until you have fully healed before embarking on such journeys. Typically, a follow-up appointment with your ophthalmologist will help determine if you are ready to travel. Factors to consider include your current visual acuity, any ongoing symptoms, and the overall health of your eyes. If your doctor gives you the green light, ensure you take precautions during your flight, such as using lubricating eye drops to combat dryness and wearing sunglasses upon arrival to protect your eyes from bright light.

4. Post-Surgery Care and Precautions: After laser eye surgery, proper care is crucial for optimal recovery. Here are some essential tips:
- Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes: This can disrupt the healing process and lead to complications.

- Use Prescribed Eye Drops: Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding the use of antibiotic or anti-inflammatory eye drops to prevent infection and reduce inflammation.

- Limit Screen Time: Give your eyes a break from screens to avoid strain, especially in the initial weeks post-surgery.

- Wear Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from UV rays and bright lights, especially during the healing phase.

- Avoid Swimming and Hot Tubs: For at least a few weeks post-surgery, to reduce the risk of infection.

- Follow Up with Your Doctor: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery and address any concerns.

In conclusion, while some post-operative symptoms can be concerning, many are part of the normal healing process. It’s essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider and report any persistent or worsening symptoms. Your eye health is paramount, and adhering to your doctor's advice will help ensure a smooth recovery. Safe travels and best wishes for your continued healing!
