Menstrual issues
Hello, doctor.
I have some questions:
1.
My menstrual cycle has been irregular for the past six months, starting from July of last year with periods on 7/20, 8/20, 9/26, 10/27, 11/30, and 1/7.
As of today, 2/21, my period has not arrived.
I experienced clear, abundant discharge on 2/8, 2/9, and 2/10, which I had not noticed before 1/7 until 2/8.
I had intercourse on 2/9 and 2/11.
What is the likelihood of pregnancy in this situation?
2.
On 2/18, I visited a gynecologist and took a pregnancy test, which showed negative results.
The doctor prescribed Promone 100mg for three days and mentioned that it can be taken even if I am pregnant.
Could it be that the test was taken too early?
3.
After taking Promone 100mg, I experienced uterine pain, but the pain subsided once the medication wore off.
Is this normal?
4.
I have finished the medication.
If my period still does not arrive, when would you recommend I take another pregnancy test or return to the gynecologist?
5.
Can taking Promone 100mg cause diarrhea?

Understanding menstrual irregularities and pregnancy concerns can be quite complex, especially for women experiencing changes in their menstrual cycle. Let’s break down your questions and concerns systematically.
1. Irregular Menstrual Cycles and Pregnancy Probability: It’s not uncommon for women to experience irregular menstrual cycles due to various factors such as stress, hormonal imbalances, or underlying health conditions. Your cycle has been irregular since July, with significant gaps between periods. The presence of clear, abundant discharge can sometimes indicate ovulation, but it can also be a sign of other hormonal changes. Given that you had unprotected intercourse on February 9 and 11, there is a possibility of pregnancy, but it is difficult to estimate the likelihood without knowing if you ovulated during that time. Since you mentioned that you have not had a period since January 7, it would be advisable to monitor for any signs of pregnancy, such as missed periods or other symptoms.
2. Early Pregnancy Testing: You visited a gynecologist on February 18, and the pregnancy test was negative. It’s possible that you tested too early, especially if you ovulated later than expected. Pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period. If your cycle is irregular, it may be beneficial to wait a few days to a week after your expected period to retest or consult your doctor again.
3. Effects of Promone (Progesterone): Promone, which contains progesterone, is often prescribed to help regulate menstrual cycles or support early pregnancy. It is not uncommon to experience some discomfort or cramping when taking progesterone, as it can affect the uterine lining and cause changes in the menstrual cycle. If you experienced pain while taking the medication that subsided afterward, it could be a normal response to the hormonal changes induced by the medication. However, if the pain is severe or persistent, it is essential to consult your healthcare provider.
4. When to Retest for Pregnancy: After completing the course of Promone, if your period does not arrive, it would be prudent to wait about a week before taking another pregnancy test. If the test remains negative and your period does not start, you should return to your gynecologist for further evaluation. They may want to perform a blood test for pregnancy or investigate other potential causes for your irregular cycles.
5. Side Effects of Promone: While gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea are not commonly associated with progesterone, every individual reacts differently to medications. If you notice significant changes in your bowel habits after starting Promone, it would be wise to discuss this with your doctor. They can help determine if the medication is the cause or if there might be another underlying issue.
In summary, irregular menstrual cycles can complicate the understanding of potential pregnancy. It is crucial to monitor your symptoms, allow time for the medication to take effect, and follow up with your healthcare provider for personalized advice. If you continue to experience irregularities or discomfort, do not hesitate to seek further medical evaluation. Your health and well-being are paramount, and your doctor can provide the best guidance tailored to your situation.
