Testicular concerns
Doctor, I have recently noticed that sometimes the angle of my testicles feels like it changes from "head up, feet down" to "head down, feet up." Besides feeling a bit sore to the touch, there is no significant pain or discomfort.
Is it normal for the angle of the testicles to change? Should I see a doctor about this? Thank you.

When it comes to the position of the testicles, it is not uncommon for them to change slightly due to various factors such as temperature, physical activity, and even the position of the body. The testicles are housed in the scrotum, which is a muscular sac that can contract or relax in response to temperature changes or physical stimuli. This means that the testicles can move closer to the body when it is cold and drop lower when it is warm, which is a normal physiological response.
However, if you are experiencing a noticeable change in the angle or position of your testicles, especially if it is accompanied by discomfort or a sensation of heaviness, it is important to pay attention to these symptoms. While mild discomfort can be normal, any persistent or severe pain, swelling, or changes in the appearance of the testicles should prompt a visit to a healthcare provider.
Here are some key points to consider regarding testicular position changes and when to seek medical advice:
1. Normal Variability: The testicles can change position naturally. Factors such as muscle tone, temperature, and even arousal can affect their position. If the changes are minor and do not cause significant discomfort, they may not be a cause for concern.
2. Pain or Discomfort: If you notice that the discomfort you feel is increasing or if you experience sharp pain, it is advisable to consult a doctor. Pain can be a sign of conditions such as epididymitis (inflammation of the epididymis), testicular torsion (twisting of the spermatic cord), or hernias.
3. Swelling or Changes in Size: Any swelling, lumps, or changes in the size of the testicles should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. These could indicate conditions such as varicocele, hydrocele, or tumors.
4. Associated Symptoms: If you experience other symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, or changes in urinary habits, these could indicate a more serious condition that requires immediate medical attention.
5. Regular Self-Exams: It is important to perform regular self-exams of the testicles to become familiar with their normal size and shape. This can help you detect any changes early on.
6. Consulting a Specialist: If you have concerns about the position of your testicles or any associated symptoms, it is best to consult a urologist. They can provide a thorough examination and determine if any further testing or treatment is necessary.
In summary, while it is normal for the testicles to change position slightly, any persistent discomfort, pain, or other concerning symptoms should not be ignored. It is always better to err on the side of caution and seek medical advice if you are unsure about your symptoms. Regular check-ups and self-examinations are key components in maintaining reproductive health.
