Pain and Concerns During Masturbation: A Guide for Young Men - Urology

I started masturbating, but I do it for a long time, and after a while, it starts to hurt?

Hello Doctor: I started masturbating in sixth grade, mostly using the pressure method.
Recently, I began using the normal method of masturbation, but it hurts the first time.
Is this normal? Additionally, when I am not erect, my glans is covered by the foreskin, and when I try to retract the foreskin while showering, I can only pull it back to a certain extent (just below the glans), and it feels like there is another layer of skin covering the corona.
Does this indicate phimosis? Should I see a doctor? Also, when I use the normal method of masturbation, it takes me a long time, sometimes up to 10 minutes, and sometimes I can't ejaculate at all, whereas with the pressure method, I would ejaculate within a few minutes.
Is this normal? Thank you for your response.

Hello: In personal clinical experience, a tight foreskin can potentially have an impact, but it does not affect everyone.
Additionally, you may have a condition known as phimosis, and it is advisable to seek medical evaluation.

When it comes to understanding the concerns and experiences related to masturbation, especially for young men, it's essential to approach the topic with sensitivity and a clear understanding of human anatomy and sexual health.
Firstly, experiencing pain during masturbation, particularly when trying a new technique or method, can be relatively common. If you have been primarily using a pressure-based technique, transitioning to a different method may cause discomfort as your body adjusts. Pain can result from a variety of factors, including friction, lack of lubrication, or even anxiety about the new experience. It’s important to ensure that you are relaxed and using adequate lubrication to minimize discomfort. If the pain persists or worsens, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying issues.

Regarding your concern about the foreskin and whether it is too long, it’s important to note that variations in foreskin length and the ability to retract it are common. If you find that you can only retract the foreskin to a limited extent, this could be a sign of a condition known as phimosis, which is when the foreskin cannot be easily retracted over the glans (the head of the penis). Phimosis can be normal in younger boys, but if it causes pain, difficulty in hygiene, or issues during sexual activity, it may require medical evaluation. A healthcare provider can assess your situation and provide guidance on whether any treatment is necessary.

As for the duration it takes to reach orgasm during masturbation, this can vary significantly from person to person and can depend on several factors, including the method of stimulation, psychological state, and physical arousal levels. It’s not uncommon for individuals to find that different techniques yield different results in terms of time and intensity. If you previously found it easier to reach orgasm with a pressure-based technique, it may take time to adjust to a new method. This is perfectly normal, and there is no "right" amount of time it should take.

In summary, while some discomfort during masturbation can be normal, persistent pain should not be ignored. If you have concerns about your foreskin or experience ongoing issues with sexual function, seeking advice from a healthcare professional is a good step. They can provide personalized recommendations and reassurance. Remember, sexual health is an important aspect of overall well-being, and being informed about your body can help you make better decisions regarding your health.
