A cool sensation in the throat?
Hello Dr.
Chi, for the past month, I've been feeling a cool sensation deep in my throat, and my breathing also feels cool, especially after meals.
There's no pain in my throat, just this cool feeling.
I'm not sure what could be causing this.
Thank you, Dr.
Chi!

Dr. Ji Zhaoyun reply Otolaryngology
Hello, the situation you described may be chronic pharyngitis.
It is recommended to seek medical attention for a laryngoscopy examination (to rule out any masses) and to consider medication treatment.
In addition to medication, please pay attention to the following daily living tips: avoid lying down for two hours after eating, and refrain from coffee, tea, cigarettes, alcohol, fried foods, and spicy foods, as these can help improve symptoms.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Chi Chao-Yun, Taichung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info
The sensation of coolness in the throat, particularly after eating, can be attributed to several factors, both physiological and environmental. While the experience of a "cool" feeling in the throat may not be inherently alarming, it is essential to consider various potential causes to understand this phenomenon better.
1. Physiological Responses: After eating, the body directs blood flow to the digestive system, which can sometimes lead to a temporary sensation of coolness in other areas, including the throat. This is due to the redistribution of blood flow and the body's natural response to digestion. Additionally, if you consume cold foods or beverages, this can directly contribute to the cool sensation in your throat.
2. Environmental Factors: If you are in an air-conditioned environment or exposed to cold air, this can also create a sensation of coolness in the throat. Air conditioning can dry out the mucous membranes in the throat, leading to a feeling of coolness or even slight irritation.
3. Allergic Reactions: Allergies can cause various sensations in the throat, including coolness. Allergens can lead to inflammation and changes in sensation, which might be perceived as a cool feeling. If you have a history of allergies, this could be a contributing factor.
4. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): GERD can cause a variety of sensations in the throat, including a feeling of coolness or a burning sensation. This occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, irritating the throat and potentially altering sensation.
5. Nerve Sensitivity: The throat is innervated by various nerves, and any irritation or inflammation can lead to altered sensations. Conditions such as post-nasal drip, where mucus drips down the back of the throat, can also create unusual sensations, including coolness.
6. Psychological Factors: Sometimes, sensations in the body can be influenced by psychological factors. Anxiety or stress can heighten awareness of bodily sensations, leading to a perception of coolness in the throat.
7. Infections: While you mentioned that there is no pain in your throat, it is worth noting that some infections, particularly viral infections, can cause changes in sensation without significant pain. If there are accompanying symptoms like a cough or nasal congestion, this could be a sign of an underlying infection.
Given these potential causes, it is advisable to monitor your symptoms closely. If the sensation persists or is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, difficulty swallowing, or changes in voice, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend a thorough examination, which could include a physical examination of the throat, allergy testing, or imaging studies if necessary.
In summary, the cool sensation in your throat could stem from various factors, including physiological responses to eating, environmental influences, allergies, or even psychological factors. Keeping track of when this sensation occurs and any associated symptoms can provide valuable information for your healthcare provider in determining the underlying cause.
