Conceive Plus fertility lubricant itching?

Hello Doctor: I am currently trying to conceive.
Yesterday, the day before ovulation, I used a well-reviewed fertility lubricant for the first time.
After applying it inside the vagina, I experienced noticeable itching and a stinging sensation, which lasted for about 3 to 5 minutes before subsiding.
During the process, I only felt a slight warming sensation without any other discomfort.
I asked my husband if he felt any irritation or itching, and he said he did not.
The product's ingredients include: deionized water, hypromellose, sodium chloride, methylparaben, glycerol, sodium phosphate, potassium chloride, sodium dihydrogen phosphate, magnesium chloride, and calcium chloride.
I found online that many people say this lubricant is gentle and non-irritating, which contradicts my experience.
Doctor, if I become pregnant, will the baby be healthy? If there is indeed an issue with the product, could it affect the fetus's health or cause deformities? Thank you.

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, it should not have an impact.
If there is no vaginal dryness, it is recommended not to use any lubricants or adjuncts.
Wishing you good health.

When considering the use of Conceive Plus lubricant during the conception process, especially in the context of potential pregnancy, it is essential to evaluate both the safety of the product and the symptoms you experienced.
First, let's address the ingredients of Conceive Plus. The lubricant contains deionized water, hypromellose (a cellulose derivative), sodium chloride, methylparaben, glycerol, sodium phosphate, potassium chloride, sodium dihydrogen phosphate, magnesium chloride, and calcium chloride. Most of these components are commonly used in various personal care products and are generally considered safe for topical application. Hypromellose, for instance, is often used in eye drops and is known for its lubricating properties. Sodium chloride and other salts are also commonly found in many formulations and are typically well-tolerated.

However, your experience of itching and a burning sensation upon application raises some concerns. While many users report that the lubricant is gentle and non-irritating, individual reactions can vary significantly. Itching and burning could indicate a sensitivity or allergic reaction to one or more of the ingredients. It is also possible that the pH balance of the lubricant does not align well with your vaginal environment, leading to discomfort.

Regarding your concerns about the safety of the lubricant if you become pregnant, it is important to note that the ingredients in Conceive Plus are not known to be teratogenic (capable of causing birth defects) when used as directed. The risk of harm to a developing fetus from topical application of such lubricants is generally considered low. However, if you are experiencing irritation, it would be wise to discontinue use and consult with a healthcare provider for alternative options that are specifically designed for use during conception and pregnancy.

If you do conceive, the presence of irritation from the lubricant is unlikely to affect the health of the fetus. However, if you have ongoing concerns about the lubricant or any other products you are using, it is always best to discuss these with your obstetrician or a healthcare provider who specializes in maternal-fetal medicine. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and any specific sensitivities you may have.

In summary, while the ingredients in Conceive Plus are generally regarded as safe, your personal reaction suggests that it may not be suitable for you. If you are trying to conceive, consider using a different lubricant that is specifically marketed as hypoallergenic or designed for sensitive individuals. Always prioritize your comfort and health, and do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for guidance tailored to your situation.
