Can I get pregnant?

Hello doctor, on the night of March 22, I noticed some discharge from my vagina that was a bit brown and thick.
Shortly after, I saw a few drops of blood.
Not long after that, I had intercourse with my boyfriend, and he ejaculated inside me.
What is the likelihood of becoming pregnant in this situation? In the morning, I experienced a flow of blood similar to my menstrual period.

Chen, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/03/23

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, based on your description, there is a possibility of pregnancy.
I recommend that you quickly use emergency contraception (such as the morning-after pill).
If your period is more than a week late, you should also take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health, Dr.
Zhang.

More Info

When it comes to the possibility of getting pregnant after experiencing brown discharge and having intercourse, several factors need to be considered. Brown discharge often indicates old blood, which can occur at various times in the menstrual cycle, including before or after a period. It can also be a sign of ovulation, especially if it occurs mid-cycle.
In your case, if the brown discharge occurred around the time you expected your period, it could be related to the menstrual cycle. However, if you had intercourse shortly after this discharge and if you were in your fertile window (the days leading up to and including ovulation), there is still a chance of pregnancy. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so if you ovulated shortly after the intercourse, conception could occur.

The presence of a few drops of blood after the brown discharge could also indicate that your body is preparing for menstruation, or it could be a sign of implantation bleeding if you are indeed pregnant. Implantation bleeding typically occurs around 6 to 12 days after conception when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining.
If you are concerned about the possibility of being pregnant, the best course of action is to wait until your expected period date and take a home pregnancy test. These tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period. If you experience any unusual symptoms, such as severe pain or heavy bleeding, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider.

In summary, while there is a possibility of getting pregnant after brown discharge and intercourse, it largely depends on the timing of your cycle and whether you were ovulating. If you have any further concerns or if your symptoms persist, please reach out to a healthcare professional for personalized advice and support.
