Is It Asthma? Throat Noises and Chest Tightness - Pulmonology

Is this considered asthma?

Hello Doctor, I have two questions.

1.
Recently, I sometimes yawn, and when I inhale deeply, my throat makes a wheezing sound.
Last night, I woke up in the middle of the night, and I also noticed a noise in my throat while inhaling, which is somewhat like a wheeze but not exactly.
It’s just a noise, and drinking some water helped eliminate the sound.
Could this be a symptom of asthma? I know asthma typically produces wheezing sounds from the chest, but does it also count if the noise comes from the throat? I had asthma as a child, but it went away later.
2.
I have been experiencing chest tightness (often needing to take a deep breath) for several decades.
Does this also qualify as asthma?
P.S.
I have had a chest X-ray and an electrocardiogram, and there were no significant issues with my heart or lungs.
Thank you, Doctor.

Hello: The sounds from phlegm or laryngeal secretions are different from asthma; asthma typically presents with wheezing and shortness of breath.

When considering the symptoms you described—throat noises during inhalation and chest tightness—it is essential to understand the potential relationship between these symptoms and asthma, as well as other respiratory conditions.
1. Throat Noises and Asthma: The sound you hear when yawning or inhaling deeply, described as a "wheeze" or "whistle," can be indicative of airway obstruction. While asthma is typically characterized by wheezing that originates from the chest, it is important to note that the upper airways can also produce similar sounds. These noises may arise from conditions such as laryngospasm, which is a sudden tightening of the vocal cords, or from inflammation in the throat. Given your history of asthma, it is possible that your airways are reacting to certain triggers, leading to these audible sounds. However, it is crucial to differentiate between asthma-related wheezing and noises caused by other conditions affecting the throat or upper airways.

2. Chest Tightness and Long-term Symptoms: The sensation of chest tightness and the need to take deep breaths can be associated with asthma, but they can also stem from other conditions such as anxiety, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or even gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Since you mentioned experiencing chest tightness for several decades, it is important to consider whether this symptom has changed in nature or intensity. Chronic symptoms that have persisted over time may indicate a different underlying issue than acute asthma.

Given that you have undergone chest X-rays and an electrocardiogram (ECG) without significant findings, it may be beneficial to pursue further evaluation. A pulmonary function test (PFT) could provide more insight into your lung function and help determine if there is any obstructive or restrictive pattern present. Additionally, if you have not already done so, consulting with a pulmonologist may be advantageous. They can assess your symptoms in the context of your medical history and perform necessary tests to clarify the diagnosis.

In summary, while your symptoms could potentially relate to asthma, they may also indicate other respiratory or upper airway conditions. It is essential to have a thorough evaluation to determine the exact cause of your symptoms and to develop an appropriate management plan. If you experience any worsening of symptoms, such as increased difficulty breathing, persistent coughing, or changes in the nature of the noises, it is important to seek medical attention promptly.
