Can I get pregnant?

Hello, I am currently on my second pack of Diane and had sexual intercourse on the tenth day (with ejaculation inside).
Is there a chance of pregnancy? When I consulted my doctor, he mentioned that this dosage is considered high and that I could take it before bed, but I usually take it between 10 PM and midnight without missing any doses.
Is this correct? I have heard that gastrointestinal issues can affect the contraceptive effectiveness; does this refer specifically to conditions like gastroenteritis? Thank you.

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/04/12

Dear user, thank you for your question.
If medications are taken as prescribed, the likelihood of pregnancy is very low.
Poor gastrointestinal function does not affect the effectiveness of contraception, unless vomiting occurs or the medication is not taken.

When it comes to the question of whether you can get pregnant while taking Diane birth control pills, it’s important to understand how these contraceptives work and the factors that can influence their effectiveness.

Diane is a combination oral contraceptive that contains two hormones: ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and cyproterone acetate (a progestin). When taken correctly, these pills are highly effective at preventing pregnancy, with a typical use failure rate of about 7% and a perfect use failure rate of less than 1%. This means that if you take the pill consistently and correctly, the chances of becoming pregnant are very low.

In your case, you mentioned that you are currently on your second pack of Diane and had unprotected intercourse on the tenth day of taking the pills. Since you have been taking the pills consistently without missing any doses, you are likely protected against pregnancy. The effectiveness of the pill generally increases after the first seven days of consistent use, so by the tenth day, you should be well within the protective window.

Regarding the timing of when you take the pill, it is recommended to take it at the same time each day to maintain consistent hormone levels in your body. Taking the pill between 10 PM and midnight is acceptable as long as you do it consistently. The key is to avoid missing doses, as this can decrease the effectiveness of the contraceptive.

You also raised a concern about gastrointestinal issues affecting the efficacy of the pill. It is true that certain gastrointestinal conditions can impact how well the pill works. For example, if you experience vomiting or severe diarrhea shortly after taking the pill, your body may not absorb the hormones effectively, which could lead to a risk of pregnancy. Conditions like gastroenteritis or any other illness that affects your digestive system can potentially interfere with the absorption of the medication. However, if you have not experienced any such symptoms, your pill should still be effective.

If you are still concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, consider taking a home pregnancy test if your period is late or if you experience any unusual symptoms. Additionally, consulting with your healthcare provider can provide you with personalized advice and reassurance based on your specific situation.

In summary, if you have been taking Diane birth control pills consistently and correctly, the likelihood of becoming pregnant is very low, even after having unprotected intercourse on the tenth day. Ensure that you continue to take your pills as directed, and if you have any further concerns or experience any gastrointestinal issues, reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance.
